Hello there dear members , I’m a deviating here from Omega topic , but I found this section of the forum and decided to touch on aspect of Panerai watches as I don’t see any posted or maybe I’m not looking correctly, I myself do like them , having acquired few , the moment I saw them in the AD show case couldn’t take my eyes off of them, I have submersible 243 , the very limited labamba 87H and flyback 212, rarely wearing them as they are big boys haha, last time I had the 243 on my wrist when walking my daughter to altar 7 years ago , lately reading some articles , commentaries and other news sources about watch brands , I’m finding out the Panerai fell out of favor with collectors, mine are almost 20 years old , with the original movements, I understand that Panerai is producing what they say In House movements now, besides all that they don’t hold their value, even when the production numbers are extremely low, my 87H i one of only 200 pieces produced , this is the one before they changed to 243 , 1950 case style, wondering here , what’s your take on all this , does anyone here have one ? thank you for your attention , I’ll try including some pics here, good day , kazd,

Irony on: Panerai seems to be the FIAT Multipla in the design cosmos: you have to like it (yes, there are fans) Irony off.

I'm especially interested in older models and the history beyond,

but that's a minefield. Unless you ask Jose beforehand. 😀

They have been under the radar for the last few years with marketing. I don't see the celebrity endorsements that used to be everywhere.

Fanboy movement imploded many years ago and you don’t see much on them anymore.

Quick Google

Panerai’s drop in popularity stems from a shift in watch market trends away from massive cases, combined with years of overproduction, controversial movement scandals, and rising prices

Overproduction and Limited Edition Fatigue: Under parent company Richemont, the brand flooded the market with endless "limited editions" that featured only minor cosmetic changes. This hurt real scarcity, alienated core collectors (known as the Paneristi), and caused secondary market values and resale prices to plummet.

Movement and Quality Control Issues: Trust eroded due to internal controversies—such as questionable "in-house" movement claims, silent downgrades to movement specs (like removing hacking seconds), and quality control complaints involving plastic component parts in newer movements.

They did change the leather strap scene in their day. 👍👍

hello and thank you, very interesting info, yes the movement maybe imploded , but IMHO the 1950 style cases are still my favorite, and relieved to know as I searched that my old models have the modified Valjoux 7750 movements inside , not sure if that changes anything , the 87H labamba that I have , only 200 were produced so can’t say is overproduced , it is no doubt a little chunky on the wrist but the deep blue dial that change’s appearance with different angles of the light on it is fantastic , I don’t wear it much maybe I should, glad to know there are others with interest in this aspect , good day everyone, kazd

There was definitely a day where they were very popular with a dedicated group of passionate collectors.

Your watches are from what I would call the golden era. 👍

Their marketing put the focus on the wrong watch line. Radiomir's cushion case and wirelugs is still my favorite. I'd go as far to say a certain smartwatch copied Radiomir heavily.

Winding the manual Radiomir with that substantial onion crown is a joy! Nothing has come close to it. The distinctive clicks to every mm of winding is just audible gold that I also feel on my thumb and index finger.

@kazd , your Submersible collection is beautiful.
You should definitely add a Radiomir, Panerai's symbol and iconic model, the first in history with wire lugs

I still feel like they peaked with the PAM104, the in-house movements got off to an extremely rocky start, a good mate bought a PAM321 and it was nothing but trouble, returned it twice for repair when brand new as it kept stopping, they ended up accusing him of abusing it despite it being perfect externally.

After sitting in a drawer for ages, I took it to my vintage watchmaker, who @watchyouwant also uses, and as he took it apart he's feeling sharp unfinished edges on parts, and just shakes his head and goes "They aren't very good at making their own". He serviced it, it ran for a week on his winder, and it stopped again in his shop.

He tore it down and found that one of the pallet jewels was ever so slightly too far back to properly engage with the escape wheel, when freshly serviced, the fresh oil must have given just enough engagement to keep it engaging and running for a week or two each time. He adjusted the pallet fork, de-burred a few parts that should have been better finished, and it ran for many years after that.

Their service people probably looked at the parts, saw no wear and assumed it was fine, likely not considering a manufacturing defect relating to poor tolerances.
