Is my fathers Omega a write off?

Hello good people!
My father (born in '47) found this piece when he was around 12, he thinks. After he and his father tried to find the owner, my grandfather used it until the day my father left to serve in the military. My father used it from that day until he got a job after the army, and he bought a new watch, and this one was left in a drawer. Now it winds but stops and starts as it will. My father took it to someone claiming to know watches, which told him it was best used as parts.
My father was gutted, and I think this sounds strange.

Can anyone tell me something about it? I have not opened it..
Sorry for the poor quality of the pictures..

It's actually a desirable model in the collector market, but it does have condition issues.

If you (or he) want to use it, it would obviously require a good service, and they are not cheap.

If it is ever to be sold, better to sell it complete, as it would almost certainly have more value than parts alone.

IMHO you shouldn' t sell a family heirloom. Never. If you don't want to spend money for the service, keep it as it is.
A service of a so simple watch it's not costly, if there are no parts broken.

That is not necessarily true. Costs vary widely depending on locations, and other variables. Also, $200 or more can be "costly" for some people.

Thank you for your answers! He will never sell it I believe, but it would be nice to surprise him with it in working conditions. So it should be possible to repair it? Does the model have a name or number for reference?

It is what is called a "bumper" automatic. Best to find a watchmaker who is familiar with that type of mid-century technology, though most of a certain age are, as would be with vintage Omega watches.

Lovely watch and those syringe hands! That’s a keeper.

And if you post where you’re based, someone may be able to recommend a reliable (and reasonably priced) watchmaker

When you service it….new crystal for sure. Movement only. Do not touch the dial, hands and case.

Keep it and service it, those hands are lovely! Not sure if the lume has been reapplied given the "fat" shape of the numbers and the difference in patina, pictures are too blurry to tell..

My Lume is pretty similar in shape, just more yellowish.

Try and find a watchmaker. Do not take to a jewelry store unless they have a watchmaker on site or they will send it out and double the service cost.

if no one here can recommend a watchmaker in your location. See if any Norway watch sites can recommend someone if a site exists

Geir, please hold on to the watch. I am pretty sure it can be fixed.
If you ever visit Denmark, I know a retired watchmaker who might be able to fix it for a reasonable sum. Drop me a PM.

This is exactly the same dial and lume, only my father's dial has some more yellowish patina on it.

I usually drive through Denmark every summer, so this is possible.
Thank you for all your answers, I'm stoked!

Hei Geir,
You will likely have to send it to Oslo. If that's an option then I can recommend Ur Tjenesten. Just google and you will find the contact info.

Har selv samme modellen... Lykke til
