You should be able to do so without pulling the crown. You won't wind it if the crown is pulled AFAIK
Here is mine. 1959 gold cap Hands are different than yours. This watch, including the crystal, is totally original except for the crown. My watchmaker could not find a gold capped crown to replace the one that had worn through.
it is a beauty. I am looking for a crown as well. I will replace it with one from otto frei. What kind of strap do you have? is it original? i am looking for one as well
These bands and straps are aftermarket, dare I say counterfeit. They will look good and are appropriately priced while you consider how much you really want to put into your watch. http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Genuine...264138?hash=item3f5f447f0a:g:eTMAAOSwUuFWv3jSPurchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network another http://www.ebay.com/itm/18mm-Omega-...054555?hash=item2eed70491b:g:IEMAAOxyOlhSs3V0Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
I don't mean to be rude and I'm no expert at all. But yours seems to be an obvious redial to me. The fat script (seamaster) would be a tell tale to me as a non-expert
This watch was my mothers wedding present to my father in 1959. I assumed that she bought it new. But now that I look at with a loop, you might be right. I don't think my dad ever had it redialed. ???
As I said before, you should make sure to get the opinions of the specialists. But nevertheless, I hate to be the bearer of bad news. As it was often said here on this forum, redials were frequently done during services back in the days - even without telling the owner about it, as it was considered to be contributing a benefit to the watch. https://omegaforums.net/threads/research-question-on-an-omega-cal-354-dial.37883/#post-436882
Absolutely you can wind the watch manually. No need to pull the frown out unless you are changing the time. It is wound in the same manner as any manually wound watch. The only exception being you can wind forever, and the crown will continue to turn. This feature is built into automatics so they can't over-wind themselves in wear.
Thanks for the info Chronos. Good or bad it really makes no difference in this case. The watch is not going to be sold, as it has sentimental value. I can't get the case back off to check the serial number. Now I am curious. My dad worked at Kennedy Space Center in Florida when I was a kid. Maybe it was redialed because of moisture intrusion from the humidity. ???
That's a good possibility. It was routine for watchmakers to send dials out to be redone when watches were brought in for service. We see this all the time. gatorcpa
Beautiful watch. I have one just like yours but it stopped working 10 years ago and sits in my sisters drawer. Seeing your beauty makes me want to fix mine !
Arnaud, I find yours is a very nice looking watch, even as it is. As Northernman said, do not even try to get the dial cleaned. (And do not try to open the case yourself either.) Yes, some crowns can be gold plated. Usually watch purists do not like cases to be polished, its considered a bit of a sacrilege, but in this particular instance it might be nice for the case to be buffed a bit with a cloth. You should make sure the watchmaker does not use a polishing machine as it would damage the edges of the case. Also keep in mind excessive polishing or buffing will create too much contrast between the dial patina and the shine on the case. Since you're not far from Washington, you may want to check with Zaf Basha at ClassicWatch.com, he's a well known dealer and an authority on vintage watches and I believe he does repairs. (I live in France so have never used him myself). http://www.classicwatch.com/vintage-watch-repair/ Not sure what his prices would be but this should give you an idea of his (extraordinary) skills --and respect for vintage watches: http://www.classicwatch.com/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=48&p=54&hilit=restoration#p54 If you wanted to get your watch repaired in France, there's a thread somewhere here with lots of recommended watchmakers. Best regards, S
I am planning to send my watch to classicwatch anytime soon for service On their website, they are asking for the value of my watch. I guess this is for the insurance of the return shipment. Do you have an idea of the value of my watch?
Have it restored. As someone that lost his father and inherited his watches I cannot tell you what pleasure it gives me to wear them.
