Is it time to know what time is?

Spacetime is an expanding sphere. Moving forward through time is travelling north, the past is south. As it is expanding faster than you can travel in any direction, you can never reach the north pole. You cannot go beyond the south pole (the beginning of time) because a) the sphere shrinks to a point, and b) even if you could somehow pause the shrinking, you'd be travelling north again.

Unfortunately, I am not (at the moment) high.

I just finished reading Why Time Flies - thanks for the recommendation. I thought it was fascinating and probably worth an update / re-issue.
I did think it went off the boil a bit towards the very end but he explains why. I also think 'why time flies' was not the real thrust of the book and I don't fully agree with some of the conclusions drawn on that point. As a book about time and how do we define and perceive now.... I mean now.... I mean the real now... (there it goes again)….. it is the best I have read so far and keeps things in layman terms. Thanks again @Aludic :0)

I took this book back to the library ….. it was very overdue.... The Librarian said ''about time''..... I said Yes it is !!!!!

Happy new year all - I remain time poor this year but hope to change that at some point :0)

I don't know what time is--I only know that I never have enough time or enough money for all the things I want to do.

Ok ... research continues... I am coming round to the fact that time might be an illusion and I like the concept that consciousness might be a fundamental quantised force which boots up reality and projects what we see as 'stuff' from the 8th dimension....and that possibly your thoughts today could be simultaneously influencing outcomes in your past, present and future. Past present and future all exist together but are also not pre-determined. I guess that means if my watch has stopped I don't need to get it serviced. Links and info below for anyone who fancies jumping down the rabbit hole - but grab six pints of bitter - and drink quickly please, the world's about to end (or go for a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster:0)

While time is relative its not an illusion. Radio Active decay takes a finite length of time measured in half life. As long as you are on the same planet as the radio active materials you can time the process to an extremely high degree of accuracy.
Your perception of the passage of time can be highly subjective, but then again so is almost everything you experience.

The quantum components of reality don’t seem to exhibit any preferred arrow of time, or exhibit entropy, or have some sort of inevitable destiny, can they defy the arrow of time or entropy. Each and every particle, atom or molecule doesn’t age for example. Even if a particle decays into other particles, the reverse is not anomalous as particles can merge. The 3D world we see is to some degree already manufactured in our mind - as we see in 2D. Our software might be tricking us what the true nature of time and reality is - possibly due to evolution and the need to focus on resources.

This is probably one of the better sites I have found.. closer to the truth (not saying that your view is incorrect by the way) - there are just more known unknowns than people like to acknowledge IMHO

Contributors like - Deepak Chopra, Leonard Susskind, Martin Rees, Michio Kaku etc - a bit of a whose who of brain power on this site…..

I am going to have beer and a break from this topic for a long while - prefer to make my head hurt with a hangover today……
Sailing blind - certain that nothing is certain…. But got to find the time for the life of Riley :0)

I've read it all and it just confirms my long standing belief: it really doesn't matter if I have breakfast for dinner or dinner for breakfast. And sure...its always 1700 hrs.

have fun

The 3D world we see is to some degree already manufactured in our mind - as we see in 2D.
We see in 3D because we have stereoscopic vision. One eye on each side of the head, like a horse, would be 2D while two eyes to the front gives 3D vision, depth perception ,etc.
Those who aren't observant often believe they see only what they expect to see. The mind of course processes what you see but your mind does not change the reality of what is there.
You may fool yourself into believing you see a foot bridge where none exists, but that won't prevent you from doing a Wiley Coyote into a ravine.

So why do I see 3D with one eye closed.

And who told you horses see in 2D

Key words in that article
"New hypothesis"
They vaguely describe some artificial method of giving the perception of depth.
They give no evidence that it has actually worked.

PS
Horses have an extremely limited binocular over lap. At some angles the horse can focus both eyes on an object directly in front of them.
From Wiki
"horses have a range of vision of about 350°, with approximately 65° of this being binocular vision and the remaining 285° monocular vision."
If you are standing in front of a horse less that 3-4 feet from his eyes he can't see you with both eyes at the same time.
The overlap is optimal for the ground directly in front of the horse when running.
Wild horses are far sighted but most domestic horses are very near sighted so the limited arc of binocular vision is useless to them at any distance.

I get the raving issue - in the same way if I delete a word folder on my PC / empty the wastebasket it is really gone - but the file I see on my screen does not represent its true reality - it is an MS interface which represents a version of some form of reality - the question is to what degree is our brain interface showing an edited version of the truth to suit an evolutionary need..and to what degree / how does what we perceive as being conscious influence that reality.

3D means three-dimensional, i.e. something that has width, height and depth (length). Our physical environment is three-dimensional and we move around in 3D every day.

it’s called 3D tv only because it’s a 2D image made to look 3D.

Toast popping up is 3D in real life and I can see that with one eye open
