I've not really seen them, you can usually trust ads here as long-term members will call them out privately if they're dishonest in any way. But I can't imagine anyone being upset about it. AND, if they DO get upset about it, it probably gives you an answer with the whole "buy the seller" addage.

If you have questions about the seller, you can search for their buying/selling feedback. If you have a specific question about a watch being sold, it's certainly allowable to start a thread about it. Whether or not it becomes awkward would depend on the type of question you are asking. You can also ask your forum friends privately.

The best approach would be to contact the seller directly. If you STILL have concerns, there is nothing wrong with starting a thread. Just know that on rare occasion there have been dust ups. But as I recall, the last such dust up was over a redialed high dollar watch and the seller took exception to the discussion. He’s long gone and the prospective buyer was spared a very expensive lesson.

TBH: IF There is a 'dust up', that is evidence to me that the seller fails the "buy the seller" rule. IF they can't give an honest defense of their watch and let the facts speak for themselves...

Honestly, if I were selling something, I'd welcome a prospective buyer starting a thread on the item. I'd never intentionally sell something sketchy, and would much prefer it be identified as such before any sale.

How much do we all rely on "thumbs up" on a given watch for sale here? I've always taken them as an approval, of sorts, of the watch's legitimacy and overall description of the watch as written.

The seller in my tale got nasty almost immediately and started with personal attacks. Bad form on OF. This is super rare though.

That seems like reason enough TO ask questions...

Thanks guys for your informative answers, i wouldn't be bothered myself if a thread popped up with questions about my ad.
Just curious about that topic, right now i'm looking for a Speedy with a step dial for daily wear, maybe good condition.
Regards.

This is the best place to buy a watch. Keep an eye on the private sales.

I'm regularly lurking on the private sale forum and am sure I'll, eventually, purchase a watch on OF. the forum has been a great way to learn, and it's also entertaining. but just out of curiosity, by best do you mean fair pricing? good examples? interesting pieces? all of the above? I see a lot of cool stuff, in good condition, but I'm also looking on C24, Delray Watch Omega Enthusiast and other dealers.

the only thing that gives me pause (pause is not the right word, preference is probably better) is that I also like the idea of buying from a brick and mortar shop and building a relationship with a dealer, though surely I could build similar connections the longer I lurk on OF.

This is attractive at first, but less so over time as you realize you are often paying 2-3x value which gets old quickly. Maybe if you want just one vintage watch and you don’t wish to take time and effort to educate yourself and don’t mind seriously overpaying.

Yeah, my experiences with B&M or 'in the business' shops has always been some level of mistruths. Private sellers typically seem to tell you exactly the truth. I can't tell you how many stores I've been to that said "oh yeah, that was serviced last week!" on something that clearly hasn't been serviced since the Carter Administration.

EDIT: I recall looking at a listing where they used a timegrapher saying +3spd photo as evidence that the watch was running well. When I questioned it, he told me that "anything under 5ms is a great beat error!" and that "a 170 amplitude is as high as you want, any higher than 180 and it can go all the way around and mess everything up".

3 nice options for daily wear from OF members
1 from 1991 serviced
1 from 1997
145.022- 69 with step dial

Consider location re potential added costs tariffs etc

Good luck!

I don't think there's much of an advantage to building a relationship with a B&M shop or dealer. You don't need a relationship to buy from them, that's what they do.

And honestly, collectors are sitting on the best watches. If you're willing to pay dealer pricing and you see a member post a watch you like, contact them by PM and call dibs or even ask if an offer would be ok. A strong offer can sometimes pull a watch out of a collector's hands. I'd much rather have relationships with other collectors than with dealers.
