Is Instagram on steroids?

I’m wondering if other people have felt, like I have, that some of their Instagram posts have gotten some unusual levels of attention lately.

I would like to think it’s the beauty of the watch or my talent at photography, but somehow I’m a little suspicious.

There are very good reasons why my Instagram account should not be growing fast, it is hitting «natural « limitations due to what I have chosen to show or not, and to say or not.

But there’s one particular post, a blurry post of a tiny tre tacche, which seems to have caught on fire.

So here is my question:
has Instagram boosted some kind of algorithm to reengage users in the wake of a stream of very bad news about Facebook practices and algorithms? To create excitement and get people to spend more time posting and checking their accounts?

Curious what others are observing and experiencing.

I had a similar experience recently. I chalked it up to landing in some stream of recommended "posts you would like" searches, and i feel like at some point it is a self-fulfilling kind of thing. The more likes it gets, the more Instagram thinks others will like it and throws it in the search feed.

But there's certainly something going on. I have roughly 1500 followers, and the post is nearly up to 900 likes... 66% engagement isn't normal when you have only organically grown followers.

It's well known that Instagram (and Facebook) change their algorithm on a regular and unannounced basis. My second account (analog photography) did catch a lot more attention today than any other day previous. I barely engage on that one other than posting my own stuff.

same here! The number of likes has increased unexpectedly by about 50-60% without me doing anything majorly different , which puzzled me. The change was about a month ago in mid September. Chalked it down to a tweak in their algorithms.

I haven’t noticed any changes recently. I’m still getting the “investors” following me and trying to engage in conversation. I’ve stopped feeling guilty about deleting their DMs unread.

I haven't seen anything different on my posts. Did you use any new or different hashtags?

One thing I have realized after looking at the phenomenon is that the jump in "likes" is bigger for my modern watches than for vintage... 60-70% for modern, 20-30% for vintage. And nope, no change in hashtags either.

Nope. My posts still get the usually 5 to 10 likes.

Please, get a gratuitous one from me : that’s a 10 to 20% growth 😉

Usual crowd on my IG account, no changes so far

Good question, I did add one or two relatively broad hashtags but I had already used them before and never with such a dramatic effect on numbers.

Wow that’s intriguing, that never happens to me—
My old little watches must really be quite uninteresting 😜

dito, something changed in September. I usually had up to 200 likes, suddenly it spiked to 4-600 on some watches. No change in watches or quality of the pics 😁

One other thing I noticed. Previously, about 50% of the likes would come in within 12h, another 25% in the next 12h, and the last 20% would come in within 48h or so, with very few coming in after 48h.

Now, however, there seems to be a steady low-level trickle of likes coming in 36h to even 4-6 days later, which never used to happen. @Syrte , @MoclovFlop , @JimJupiter : did you notice a similar phenomenon?

Maybe they’re getting paid by certain watch companies to boost the exposure of certain hashtags for certain brands or models? Which would explain why Rolexes and modern Omegas seems to garner a lot of likes?
oooh …. That would be an interesting avenue for questioning Ms. Frances Haugen when she testifies again.
We all know part of the business model is the sale of advertisement, and the sale of tools to boost exposure of ones own account— but what if one could pay to inflate the likes generated by everyone around certain hashtags? And thus make it look like a product is universally liked when in fact there’s doping involved in the competition?

Hmmm…. 😗

My insta increased with 400% from 1 to 4 likes a day. So yes, I have exactly the same experience lately. Soon I'm going viral. It's just a matter of time.

This has been happening for years.

You can and have been able to buy reviews for many years, and many companies have been caught out.
(One company ( forget which ) not that long ago was caught out with reviews a week or two before the product was released)

For me several recent posts have seen a steady flow of likes for 3 days, whereas indeed it used to peter out after about 24 hours. And many more new « viewers ».

Edit/ add- it’s suddenly occurring to me this is happening exactly as Longines is releasing several new Heritage watches, including a Longines-Hodinkee limited edition. If Swatch Group paid Instagram to boost posts or accounts featuring Longines watches mine of course would be a target of choice…

It hasn’t happened on mine. That said, my profile is set on “private.”

@Syrte I like all of your posts on instagram. Especially the ones with paris on the backround. You're one of my favourites!
