Is anyone into naval submarines?

I am glad you shared this. My information was from internet research, but having someone with experience serving aboard a submarine is quite different. Did you ever get to meet Russian submariners?

Probably only at 1000 yards +

I spent seven years on Los Angeles class submarines... I can assure you, even the 688s are more modern, in every way, than a Russian boat.

It is rumored that the Akula class boats use minimal radiation shielding to save weight (and increase max speed).. and that the crews would have to be swapped periodically to avoid radiation sickness.

Pick up the book "Blind Man's Bluff" - an outstanding account of submarine service.
I spent four years looking for you nutty bubbleheads during various exercises (I flew SH-60B Seahawks). You guys were hard to find! And when you turned your noise makers off...you became un-found in a quick-like fashion! 馃槈

I don't know how you can even consider any branch of the Russian navy as a worthy counterpart vs the American Navy. Or for that matter the British, Australian, German, or Japanese Navies.

Correct me if I am wrong but the Russian Navy has not had a significant naval engagement since 1905 when, while still ruled by the Tsar, their entire high seas fleet was sunk by the Japanese.

The cold war was fought between USA and Soviet Russia. Logically, that means they were and still are a worthy counterpart. Believe it or not, Russia is still the biggest threat to USA.

Don't forget the swiss navy...

We have so small submarines that nobody can't see, hear or located it...and as a small country we prefer a small aircraft carrier馃榿

I have always felt very safe traveling on the lakes of Switzerland. Don't forget about their cool hidden forts as well!

This is kinda what they would like you to believe. The Russians are very clever people. Never underestimate them.
Especially when they allow you to think they are less than world class...in anything. But in general, whoever is NOT boasting about ANYTHING is the one to watch.

Again this is a super simplistic view. Russia could barely support sending 15 planes to Syria for 2 months. They may have some great hardware but if you only have 25 current generation aircraft your able to fly on reduced hours due to having no money to operate them. Your not really a treat.

I think calling the Russian subs more advanced is a little wrong. You have to look at the needs, tactics, which influenced the design goals of the US vs the USSR. Russia could field more cheaper boats that required less training. Most Russian sailors just did the required 2-3 years and left, with a small Officer core. US subs had much higher trained enlisted with a larger officer core. This made the Russian subs much simpler to work on.

Citing Titanium hulls as higher tech is kind of looking at the problem sideways. Russia has lots of titanium to build with while the US not as much. It was a means to an end. The stronger hull could in theory take more hits then the US hulls. The higher speeds on Russian subs was their way of dealing with the tech gap between the 2 fleets. US subs tend to work alone and preserve stealth, while Russia hunter killers worked in packs. Russia could not build subs as quiet as the US subs so they fielded more, and traded stealth for raw speed.

Russia could field more subs, with less tech which they leveraged against the higher tech and much quieter US subs with better sonar that where fewer in number.

Also you need to look at the mission of the non SSBN's. American to protect Atlantic shipping, and Russia to stop Atlantic shipping, this also highly influenced design and tactics of the fleets.
Quieter...until Sweden(?) sold high tech propeller making machines to the Russians. Quite a scandal. Intel community buzzed for a while on that one if I recall correctly.

Arguments of how one country's armed forces are technologically more advanced than another make for enlightening and entertaining reading. Technology is one of several parameters that determine victory in a military campaign. History abounds with many examples of a technologically inferior force defeating a more advanced force. Training, military strategy, number of troops, will to fight, financial resources, etc all have historically played as large of a role if not larger role than technology in determining ultimate victory.

I have seen that look in my wife's eyes. I give the raised eyebrow to counteract it.

Wrong.
