Is a repainted 165.002 a good first watch?

Is important how much would you like to pay- black dial in good great condition will be more expensive vs white or silver
I didn't really come into this with a set budget in mind, and I'd be willing to pay more for a better watch. I'm certainly expecting to pay more than like $250 though. I would love to keep it under $1,000 all-in, but I'd expect to pay FMV and could adjust that for a really special watch.

There's a thread with a lot of 165.002 dial variants here too btw: https://omegaforums.net/threads/let...ster-companion-technic-technical-dials.85684/

Even aside from the dial the case is very polished as well and has lost the sharp edges a 165.002 should have. Some nice original and sharp 166.002s have gone for sale recently on the recommended thread for $500-700 with a black technical crosshairs dial going for $900 in mint condition last year, far better choices and they come along quite a bit as the 166.002/165.002 is a common watch made in large numbers.
This is an awesome thread. Thank you for sharing this.

To give you an idea, this sold on eBay auction a few weeks ago for just under $2k. This was a good one, with original bracelet and fetched a suitably strong price.

Of the black dials these Speedy companion variants certainly command the highest prices, the technical and metallic dials are a lot lower simply by virtue of having no relationship to the vintage Speedmasters. Really nice example though that one.

Helpful context. If this is an "A" example, maybe I'm looking for a "B" example. I love that watch, but $2,000 would be hard for me to swing right now.

Yeah I really wanted this but with UK import duty it would have been almost $2.5k which was too much.
I do know a fellow OFer snagged it thankfully.

Not the specific reference you asked for, but lovely watch going for reasonable price here:

Thank you for sharing this. I hemmed and hawed, but I decided to buy this watch. Y'all convinced me about wanting an original dial, and I figure I can sell it if I end up finding an original dial black crosshair down the road and at most take a small loss rather than being stuck with an unsellable watch. I don't really want to wait and wait, so this gives me a pretty watch to wear in the meantime while I casually follow the forums.

Well done. I think it is a killer watch to wear.
