Ultraman

Valued at £30 - £40k

Chuffed for the guy as it definitely been a daily wearer looking at the nick of it.
Did the valuer know it was an Ultraman?

Well, if an appraisal in this range is given without factoring in that it concerns an Ultraman, all Speedy’s just went up by 300%, at least. So safe guess that it was known. 😉

Yep the guy bought it in HK in 1968. The valuer said it was a UM, though I think he thought they were rather more rare than is actually the case. There must be 10+ in the possession of contributors on here. Maybe 20+ even.

Amazing luck when you think about it.

Its 1968, your 21st birthday and you pick an Omega Speedmaster as a present, its a bit different as it has an orange chrono hand, it costs you £45, you put it on your wrist and wear it, day in, day out.

Role forward 51 years and you find out that your much loved, well worn and rather grubby 21st birthday present could be worth upwards of £30k.

How many watches from that era didn't make it into the 1970's or beyond, how many watches were bought as 21st presents and are how buried in landfill as they gave up working, got lost, forgotten about, and were thrown out with the trash.

I know that there are OF members all over the world who have watches they purchased in the 1960's some even earlier but you are a rare breed, to have picked that watch, unbeknown at the time that it was rare, to still have it 51 years later, still with all its original parts and unserviced, is not something that most individuals would do as tastes change and life styles change.

A lucky man.

Great little bit on Antiques Roadshow and great to see they're finally starting to cover modern Antiques/vintage collectibles and not just what was popular in the 80's.

As above, the valued was well aware it was an UM and asked to hold it as he didn't think he'd get the chance again.

Did anyone get any pics/footage?

If not I'll upload some tomo.

Great to see such a lovely watch on the program and with the story to match. What a lucky chap. I got quite excited when it appeared on the show, I tried to explain to my wife all about the UM but she did not share the same excitement.

How on earth, if it was a daily wearer, did it survive countless services and still retain it’s don and orange hand?

I think he said it had never been serviced

Look at that thing, and the lume plots...🥰. Even if you disregard it as a Ultraman it's a looker.

Mine had a glazed look in her eyes all through that segment, I recognised the look quite easily, its the same look I get when Emmerdale or Coronation St come on 😗

Then there is all the people buried with their watch. 😗 Quite common in the old days. Think my father was buried with one...

Wow, never knew that, I know you cannot be cremated wearing a watch and even rings are getting cut off before cremations, but never even thought about being buried with your watch, just assumed that it would be part of the deceased estate to sort afterwards.

Many thanks for posting the link to the show. I'm a Brit living in Australia, so it's good to see it.

Know my Mum wanted a good pair of shoes, freshly polished for my Father.
( I polished them )

Great story, and it’s always fun to see their reactions. I wonder what will happen to this watch now... 🍿
