Interesting patina

As an astronomy teacher, I find the "patina" interesting as it reminds me of granulation on the sun. Price is $525, which to me is way overpriced.

Reminds of this fantastic video, Mercury transiting the Sun in 2016.

Funny you should post that. I took my students out to watch the 2016 Mercury transit through the telescope. It also drew quite the crowd.

i think that's beautiful. curious how the dial aged, yet the printing appears intact. darker hands would make it easier to tell time, but i kinda like the stealth hands blending in.

Both watches posted are very intriguing. Someone asked above, how have the dials aged so, yet the printing remains apparently very clear? Do we think the dials are original?

I am no expert on coatings or chemistry, what I understand is the layers of coating had some reaction to chemicals, humidity or the like. I suspect that some have "encouraged" this kind of thing by toasting a dial in moderate heat. Humidity during production could be a culprit.

Yes interesting. I wonder why the black text on the dials still looks so crisp? For sub $500 the first one would be pretty cool to have in a collection for something different.

The second one I just really like 👍. I would wear that for sure.

I like the first pretty much except the case; it looks over-polished. I recently traded this, the most patinated dial I've owned:

The markers look so clean. I would expect to see rust or some deterioration. Maybe a dial specialist replated the markers?

Definitely seems to be the way, the dial can get heavy patina but the writing stays black and crisp. Not sure why, but it’s original. Here’s my beauty:
