And it all depends on how the insurers perform when a loss is incurred. What's the real world experience with these third party insurers? Any personal feedback here?

I use IFS Infosure and they are great. You can't insure watches directly with shipping companies.

Hi Emilio,
You are correct, the last time I sent a watch of this value was last year, but I just checked and as of January this year they will not insure watches for international shipments that need to be insured.

Are you referring to PostNL? Do they no longer insure watches?

If that’s true then that’s new information.

I have two words for you - “Budget airline”

Fly out to meet the buyer, have a nice little city break, fly home.

Deduct the cost of the insured shipping from the cost of the flights, add enjoyment and peace of mind, and you’ll break even at least.

I've done this three times, twice I flew to deliver the watch, once I split the airline costs with the buyer to come to me to pick up the watch. Depends on price of the sale and how flexible you want to be.

@Pearcey74 what a horrible story, it makes me not want to send any expensive watch anymore. Imagine you get an empty box back and not get backed up by the selling platform like Chrono or eBay.

In this case, flying would be a better option indeed. I did it a while ago and I saved some bucks as well.

Wait.. So none of the big shipping companies will ensure watches directly anymore? Always need a third party?

No, there are providers who dont need a third party insurance. Intex and Galle, for example. Last 6k watch I shipped, Germany to Italy, was ~120€, fully insured, door-to-door.

Just want to give an update. I contacted DHL management through their website, and received a call.
They state that it is possible to send watches up on a value of 5000,- Euro. Above that, it is not allowed to ship with DHL Express.
So any watch under 5000,- is possible to be shipped insured. Solid gold watches with gold bracelets are also allowed. I've read somewhere that some couriers label these as jewelry, but not with DHL apparently.
Pretty good service that they called me back.
Have a good day,
Jan

The funny thing is, in Germany domestic DHL express parcels are only insured up to 500€ for watches, sending from Germany abroad they are up to 5000€😕
