Insurance DHL Express

Good evening,
I want to ship an expensive (6800 EUR) watch within the EU, and was wondering what the maximum amount is that can be insured with DHL Express. It is a gold watch, and in some posts I read that they count that as jewelry. I get confused after reading so many different thoughts and information in several threads, and DHL does not state this clearly on their website. Also, I was waiting more than 30 minutes to talk to someone, and not successful after all.
Anyone who has the answer? Is it 5000? Or not at all if it is a watch?
Thanks in advance.
Jan

The answer varies in every country. You have to find out what DHL policies are in yours.

It could be different within Europe, but the last time I used DHL to ship from the US to Europe, the limit was about $500 for watches. Basically useless. I had to buy third-party insurance. You need to be careful about the limit, because some shippers will actually let you buy insurance for more, but DHL won't honor it.

I think DHL UK lists £4000 for jewellery but can’t recall if that covers watches. I think last time I tried to find out I gave up.

When i shipt to Italy i use the french express system where you can insure up to 5000€ separated form the airway bill , no need to write down what is it, just having « anonymous » shipment and hand delivered , Italy can be special anyway but 100% success as of today.

Try Secursus. Reasonably pricing. Just be sure to follow all of the terms and conditions.

Hi Jan,

I'm always insure my postage with DHL Express on International shipment from Ireland. The highest valued watch was 14k so insurance was 140eur (its a tener for every thousand).
It's easy to sort it trough MyDHL+ if you have an account there. Just register if you don't. Declare it as horology item.
For the high value package I prefered to do drop the parcel straight to DHL depot. Staff always does content check at the counter in front of cameras, so its recorded as well.
Insured ammount always reflected on the invoice.

Hope that helps.

Kind regards,
Giedrius.

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it!

@wx_073 did they confirm also that it’s a watch they insure? When I check, I can add insurance, but I don’t have to state whats in the package. Perhaps they don’t pay after filing a claim when they hear it’s a watch that was shipped.

I definitely wouldn't write that it's a watch anywhere on the package.

Write: "Precision Instrument" Harmonized Tariff Number 910229.

But in the case a claim has to be filed, you have to provide some proof of value, such as the buyers invoice. There they the item is described, which is a watch.

They deal with the insurance side only.

Once my package with the Rolex Milgauss was missed in warehouse and I filled a claim. I provided all details of the watch: model, colour, serial number. DHL issued claim number and started an investigation.
I get a luck as it was a mess due Covid. Parcel was found and delivered. It was in 2020. Claim was opened by statement that there was a watch. But I'd say you should clarify terms and conditions with your local DHL branch. Cheers.

Oke, that sounds good. I emailed DHL Express and asked for clarification on this subject, I hope they will respond soon.

@djmusicman Thank you. I was reading about Secursus, never used it myself. I like your description; Precision Instrument" Harmonized Tariff Number 910229". Never heard of that term.

@Dan S Thanks. I think it is a shame and really immoral that shippers will actually let you buy insurance for more, but know they don't cover the value of the actual watch in the box. I payed a lot for insurance of several shipments with Fedex, but found out much later that they don't actually cover insurance for expensive watches at all...

Just wanted to add my pennies worth.
In the UK, I was told by DHL it is £4500 for a watch, but, be careful regarding if the person wants to send it back (for whatever reason).
A friend sent his Rolex to another country, the buyer paid via PP, after about 3 weeks the buyer said the watch was faulty and wanted to return it for a full refund, my friend reluctantly agreed. The buyer sent it back via an insured courier that did not inspect the item before shipment.
The parcel arrived, my friend signed for it, took it indoors, opened it and found a pebble in the box.
He immediately rang PP but was asked if he had any proof or witnesses with him at the time of opening the parcel, which he didn't, so PP gave a full refund to the buyer, and my friend lost his watch.
So, please make sure if it is returned it is sent via company that will ensure the item matches what is supposed to be sent.

Hi Emilio,
You are correct, the last time I sent a watch of this value was last year, but I just checked and as of January this year they will not insure watches for international shipments that need to be insured.
