I’ll add: and learn how to do so. From my first year on IG: posting a watch once a week or so with some information that might be interesting for a nerdy group of about 7 doesn’t exactly get you there. 😁 But then I’m not exactly offering much for sale there, so that might also play a role.
Give me your Ig address and I will make it 8!

I wonder about IG and Facebook market place I’m just not much into social media, at least the big names. I did buy a decent dynamic on Reddit I sometimes feel like I’m missing out not being bigger into social media but the thought usually passes after 30 seconds

I was really happy to delete my IG account. I had 3000 followers and was growing quickly. I sold several watches there as a collector while reorganizing my collection. Simple and cheap except for the cost on your soul. If you don’t value that, you’re all good to go.

I’m new to the forum and to vintage watches, but have bought and sold sports cards on twitter and eBay for years. (I collect vintage basketball cards if anyone has nice stuff!)
I’ve never really used Instagram, but Twitter has been a great place to connect with other card collectors for me and that turns into sales. I would assume Instagram and watches are similar.

That being said, as a new watch enthusiast, I have struggled to find a reliable place to buy vintage watches. (Chrono24,eBay, watchbox just weren’t doing it for me) This forum has taught me a lot over the last couple weeks (yep, I’m BRAND NEW lol) and I have even made a purchase. What y’all have built here is really cool and provides a nice place to sell watches, or so it seems to a newbie.
I’ve been impressed with how many posts happen in an hour.

Just the perspective of a new guy, this is a great place to sell or so it seems!

iG definitely not for everyone. I limit myself to 15-30 minutes per day to enjoy sharing my watch passion with people from all over the world that I would otherwise never know. My soul unscathed.

I have bought from IG, but from users who have a legitimate website also displaying contact details and stock. A huge amount of watches are sold through IG, way way more than forums. To sell is another matter - you have to break into the algorithms to get users to see the watches you want to sell and due to anonymity of the accounts getting somebody to trust you as a seller may be difficult

Haha. I know how you feel! And I'm one of those 7 nerds!

From my point of view with vintage watches, IG is a good way to communicate with your customers, who already knew who you are, bought from you before or followed you for a long time. Then it would be a quick, easy and free way to promote the watches to your audiences, and potentialy with some sales. For those who dont know who you are, I doubt you can sell anything to them through IG. I'm also interested someone to chime in with effective IG stategies..
I agree 100%. I bought several watches very quickly from different sellers that I knew. Very effective !

I think it if you have any knack for taking crisp photos and are willing to take a little time to make quality posts, it can be a great option. I've had a decent amount of success on there.

I have never sold a watch on IG but as a potential buyer I can attest that I have become acquainted with sellers/dealers that otherwise I may have never become privy to .. so at the very least good advertisement?

I have a moderately sized IG base (a bit over 13k). I've done the following combination of 'outreach' for sales, both on and off IG, with good success. I do the following stepwise (i.e., step 1, then 2, then 3, if the previously steps haven't led to a sale):

1a) DM collectors on IG/WhatsApp who have previously talked to me about the watch/nicely expressed interest in the watch
1b) Ask a few dealers I've worked with before if they're interested in an outright sale and at what price.

2a) Reach out through WhatsApp groups to find interested collectors/dealers
2b) Put out a "close friends" IG post -- not public but finds an additional audience compared to the prior two

3) Simultaneous public IG and forum post -- usually I don't have to get this far, and you have to consider that if the watch doesn't sell quickly, will it become "stale" and lead to a lower price than you could have gotten from a dealer, who may now be wary of trying to sell it given its prior exposure.

4) Auction (formal or eBay or loupe this, etc.) -- haven't done this before but always an option

@MtV and @Shabbaz -- ha!

There are a lot of watch people on IG with a lot more followers than I, and some of them are here, so I thought "moderate" was reasonable. But feel free to follow @t_swiss_t and bump my count up to "large." 😁
