Independent Servicing In Nyc?

I'm asking on behalf of a classmate, whose wife bought him a 50's Rolex as a gift that is not keeping time recently.

He is on a grad student budget it NYC, any recommendations for a good independent watchmaker with reasonable rates? I got the feeling he would prefer a brick and mortar shop that he can walk into, rather than mailing it off to an individual somewhere.
