This is actually a pretty good analogy. When the factory does this itself and calls the cars ‘Recreation’, ‘Continuation’ or ‘Sanction 2’ or whatever a la Aston Martin or Jaguar it’s generally looked upon favourably, but when a bloke in a shed puts together a kit car it’s generally called a replica or modified car and sometimes seen in a rather less glowing light. I wonder if some view ‘Watchcos’ like the former (which is a little too rose tinted IMO) and some view them as the latter (which is maybe too harsh on the ones put together properly). I think it should be born in mind that not all ‘Watchcos’ are equal, which is where some of the negativity comes in.

No, not "from the moment they start fabrication" - no one is saying that. But a specific serial number movement, with the correct design parameters (correct hand heights, colour of date indicator, and shape of date indicator) are assigned to a specific case type.

I don't think the fact they tie it down to a specific serial number is in question. There are people here who are very familiar with the process and the staff who does the work, and they have confirmed that. There are reports from people having extracts denied on here almost every week because the case number and serial number don't match. Here's one posted last Friday by a member here:

Sure they will, but that's not relevant here. In this case you don't have a serial numbered part (the wheel train bridge by the way) that is "original" to a Seamaster 300, because the movement came from another model, like a Geneve...

According to your definition of franken...but this is not a universally accepted definition.

So perfect - proves the point that there is no universally agreed upon definition of frankenwatch.

It depends on what the meaning of the word 'is' is.

At the end of the day does it matter provided the purchaser/owner is happy and gets enjoyment? Interesting comments though!

Can someone please invent a word without negative connotations to describe a watch put together with no intent to deceive, and then we will all be happy.

Hang on - I've thought of one! How about calling it a "Watchco"? Er.......anyone?

And when ones asks "What is a Watchco?", then I would propose that we call it a conversion. One model converted to another.

In the case of the Perth , Australia (preferred imho) LewiswatchCo versions . As previously mentioned by @gostang9 " LewCo ". They are just excellent.

I love my Adam Lewis SM300. Tough as nails down to 80' on several occasions. I wear mine 24/7.

I very much agree with this, If you dont have anything nice to say dont say anything at all, Why even waste your time in this thread its not for you. As long as the watch is not being misrepresent in a sale then who cares
