Not to be a wet blanket, but for those new to Zodiac- parts are NLA, there are known maladies and it can be a serious issue when servicing. Be prepared to hunt and possibly fail several times trying to source parts. That said, they are fantastic watches and incredibly unique in a sea of sub-like divers.

I thought it was mostly an issue for Seawolves with a Date function. Is it true for no-date as well?

The maladies are the date as far as I've seen. But zodiac did a few proprietary modifications to their base movements, so some parts work from other movements, some don't.

Back in the 80s when I was in college, I worked in the electronics shop with all veterans... we were talking about watches one day and the coworker who was in Viet Nam recommended the Zodiac.

What I read is "offset cannon pinion" .
Obsolete. Problem in Datomatics.
From "The Springbar": To most of us, the term “offset cannon pinion” sounds like a jumble of seemingly unrelated words, but to a Zodiac collector it’s an all too familiar and dreaded part within their timepiece. It causes a thoroughly annoying problem, and worse than that, it is a long obsolete and out-of-production part.
I live in a relatively small town but my watch maker is out of this world.
He thinks that these watches are no problem to someone who knows what they're doing...but of course if he dies before me...

Tell me about it brother! Love my watchmaker (and he has a soft spot for Zodiacs as he used to own a Seawolf), but he's in his late 60's, loves spending time on his boat, and doesn't apparently need the money anymore. He's limited me to 4 watches at a time and takes about 6 months to get them back to me, so it's a race against the clock on his pending retirement.

So I finally took possession of my Sea Wolf!
I'm totally stoked!! I have a question though that someone here probably knows the answer to:
I think this model with a 72B should have a quick set date feature but it doesn't seem to work. I'm pretty sure I read that that feature makes the crown sit proud of the case and in some instances the stem was cut short to make the crown sit against the case. However by cutting the stem the quick set feature is rendered inoperable. Am I dreaming this up?
Anyway...here are some pics. And I'm still stoked regardless of the quick set bit!

Great looking! Have you tried the 9/12 date change? My earlier one changes that way and they still called it “quick set” as it was faster than the slow set.

Ok, just checked my later shovel hand and that does have the push set. Yours is a transitional piece- MKII dial with MKIII bezel, so it is possible that yours may be a transitional movement- either the earlier or the later- not sure when the change happened, but it was around this time.

Yeah. That's the way my watchmaker (the seller) showed me how to do it.

I looked at "Ranfft" re the 72B and its features. That's where I saw the quick set feature noted.
I'm by no means an expert...novice at best. and you read a lot of things on this internet thing...
You're probably right about the transitional thing...

I looked at ranftt too to see if there was any identifying difference between the movements but they didn’t note anything.
I would assume (I haven’t tried it- so an assumption) but if it were a push set, it probably wouldn’t change the date doing it 9/12 and would most likely just click and jump but not change, or roll back the date to the previous day- but I haven’t tried it.

I appreciate the comments and your expertise.
I'm not gonna sweat the quick set bit and just enjoy the watch.

There were several transitions on these which makes them both fun and aggravating to collect as just when you thought you had one from each generation- there is another. Zodiac seemed to roll out changes every couple years, first dial, then new hands, then new bezel, then another new dial, then totally different hands, then several color ways then finally new case shape and even more color ways.
