While I site here on the train on this frosty morning I ponder on my very short but interesting journey into the world of the Vintage watches. On my way I have discovered a number of very important items.

1. Do your own research first, provide the forum with as much information in your post, help them to help you.(Warning they are liable to bite if aggravated)

2. The watch you think you want very quickly changes, you know, ooh that's nice, then oh! that's fecking gorgeous note the references, the style you like and continue your quest. Yes we just keep adding to the list of wants.

3. Set a budget, then double it, then come back to OF for a sanity check on prices.

4. The more you look the more fakes you see any doubts make a post but always remember point 1. Oh and ensure you have an avatar.

5. Be honest with yourself, your not going to buy just one watch( but just don't tell your partner)

6. There's a vast amount of information, very informative and important on this forum, with time and effort gone into alot of posts. Search the forum first prior to asking, seek and you shall be rewarded.

Lastly bring your own coffee on the train, unless you like drinking dish water.

Bring flowers to your wife.

1. Some of my best buys have been from blurry photos 😁
2. Find a wife who doesn’t care how many watches you buy!
3. Be quick or lose out .
4. eBay is one of the safest and cheapest platforms to buy watches.
5. Look beyond the scratched up plexi.
6. Research the ref you are interested in.
7. If something is too good to be true…. It just might be a bloody bargain!
8. Never, ever email someone who is liquidating rare, cheap stock through eBay, that is too good to be true!
9. Buy from fellow collectors on here.
10. I have run out of ideas but 10 seems a bit better than 9.

10. (ii) When you have asked for input, don’t come back and argue with the people who have told you it is crap.

10 (iii) The most expensive watch you’ll ever own is the one you buy instead of the one you intensely crave 😁

Always wait 30 minutes after eating before you go swimming. Well, that's what my grandmother always told me. And, unless you are certain that you can return it, never purchase a vintage watch without having seen a photo of the movement.

I have to agree that sometimes blurry photos can be a key to a great find. I missed a few watches because I was waiting for better photos. And then someone else bought the watch. Later the seller sent not-so-blurry photos - it was a beauty!

Quoting Greg Selch: collect knowledge first.

Well there're still good/original vintage watches out there, but since the 2012 Speedmaster hype, I'm convinced that 14 years later all good/original Omega Speedmaster chronographs must sit in private collections by now. So, try to source among collectors would be my 5 cents...

1) Condition Condition Condition
2) Better to over pay for Condition today than regret Condition later
3) Always have a watch fund waiting for the member that PMs a dibs from 5 years ago
4) Don’t be shy to ask a Member if something you drool over is purchasable.
5) The more you buy the more chance you will have the next “Hot” brand.
6) Don’t fυck around sellers. Sellers like easy sales
7) No cats to page 4
8) Research Research Research
9) Know which member specialises in what your looking to buy
10) There is over 10 years of information here, don’t be scared to dig in the past for knowledge and examples
11) Be good to your mother
12) Don’t fυck with the wildlife (Aussie rule #1)

And exercise caution when buying vintage watches that have gone swimming.

As to #12….
Here in Texas, we learn at a young age not to fυck the wildlife…..some are slow learners, I’ll grant you that. 😲😵‍💫::facepalm1::

10. Never endure 6 hours of a roundtrip on a train, for a 3 hour meeting that the host talks for 3 hours non stop. While realistically you could have dialled into the meeting.

Oh well this thread has made me laugh on the journey home.

You may not have this wisdom in Texas. But in Canada our mommas teach this early.

Well, momma's focus on rattle snakes and copperheads and that crazy guy down the street a long time before yellow snow, that's for sure.

We shut down when we get a dusting of snow around the Dallas area.

At least rattlesnakes give you some warning. Copperheads, not so much. We have both here in Pennsylvania.
