You know what? I would consider not Rolex but Grand Seiko. .

Just a fun fact. Over the last 20 years, I accumulated 20 pieces.
The increased in value of 5 Rolex pieces carries the lost of he remaining 15.
That’s one Rolex carried losses of the other 3.
That tells me watches aren’t investment. BUT if you only have a few, Rolex should be on that very top list.

For me, It’s extremely difficult to ignore that fact.

So if i have 8k in my pocket now, I’ll beg a dealer to put my name on a waitlist for a sport Rolex.

oh, and if you aren’t married, the other sex mostly/usually/only recognize Rolex.
it’s not a deciding factor, but a nice bonus.

Totally agree. Rolex just has to be part of the conversation...

At the very very edge of your price point but the Milgauss blue is a dynamic watch.

I would just buy one truly iconic and classic watch that is relatively new and can be worn with reckless abandon for the next 60 years : for me that’s a Speedmaster Trilogy/60th Anniversary 2915 reissue, whilst they are still under RRP, and I would be done with the rest. Unlike all the modern Rolex, there is a finite supply of them (only about 3500 pieces total, vs e.g. 3.5million subs/ops/hulks/Daytona’s each) plus you are not going to get your arm hacked off with a Machete by your local <Insert-nationality-of-criminal-tourist-here> when cruising downtown <insert-local-big-city-here> because he will most likely not have enough grey matter between the ears to know about or recognize a non-Rolex piece.

Strange question because I don’t think many people wake up one morning and say to themselves “what shall I do with this 8k? I know I’ll become a watch collector.”

Maybe the better question is “as a watch collector, what should I ensure I have in my collection with a budget of 8k”?

As a newbie I don’t have an answer to either question. I got into all this because I’ve always had a strong collector gene, and over the years I have got into, and then out of collecting various things. I have a loft full of Lego, two bookshelves of stamp albums that haven’t been added to in years, and a few bicycles. No doubt my interest in watches will wane at some point and who knows, maybe I’ll be annoying people on Yu-gi-o card collector sites.

My interest in watches came about following a sad experience. I lost the quartz Seamaster dress watch I inherited from my grandfather. The insurance paid out enough to replace it with something similar (but an automatic, not quartz) on which I paid a fair chunk of newbie tax to a dealer, but still with plenty of change. I bought my wife a Garmin sports watch and still had a fair amount left over and that’s when I found this place.

Ahaha it s turning comic

But for sure wearing some hype watches like:
Daytona, Pepsi, hulk, nautilus a bit less with aquanaut is getting difficult to wear safely in some places. Just Heard recently that someone in a terrasse of a bar in Geneva has been ripped off his 5726... So wear this kind of watches at home or in the Mountain

If I didn’t have a watch and were to buy ONE nice, new watch, it would be:

The 36mm Datejust 126234 or
A Speedy Moonwatch (before they change the movement) or

If I were allowed to spent more than 8K I would buy the new Glashütte Original SeaQ in 39,5 mm with blue dial. That is a KILLER watch

My answer to the OP therefore, with the hope that it'll wind up in the above article, would be to start with INVICTA. Nowhere to go from there but up.

Well in my case I have aspirations of slowly working my way UP to an Invicta.

Your not hard core until you can fill the 8 Slot watch case....

And it scares me that the 50 slots are sold out

To me, a collection has a theme. What many here call a “collection” is just a bunch of watches we like to wear and have bought over time. So, to answer your question, I will give you some collection ideas where you could accumulate quite a few watches (I think) for the $8000 limit. Then ideas for a bunch (or a couple) of watches you could wear daily for years to come.

True Collections with a Theme:

1. Watches of the Vietnam War: there were lots of different styles available in the PX that American servicemen bought and wore. Most can be found for under $1000k: Glycine Airman, Ollech & Wajs Early Bird, Zodiac Sea Wolf, Seiko 6105-8000, Benrus field watch, etc.

2. Watches worn in space: of course there is the Speedmaster, but there are dozens of other brands. Go even further and limit it to watches worn on the moon, and there are more than the Speedmaster. Getting more than a one or two would probably blow your budget, though.

3. Watches worn by James Bond in the movies: lots of choices here, some Omega, but also Breitling, Seiko, and even Rolex.

Lots of other ideas there, but you see what I mean by a “collection”.

Watches to wear that don’t really have a theme:

If you just want a variety of watches to wear, get an Oris diver, a Longines dress watch, a Valjoux 7750 Chronograph (any brand), a Seiko diver for a beater, and then treat yourself to a nice vacation with the residual.

Or, if you want to focus on Omega watches, buy a used Speedmaster and a new Seamaster 300m and call it a day.

I will do as following:

1- decide the brand
2- check the collection
3-check the price ( if a model I want badly is expensive, I will save and wait )
4- or if it doesn’t matter to u which collection u want as long as it is the brand u seek, then check wat suits u with regards price and look.
