I went with a new “cheap” Rolex.

Had some unexpected travel and decided to tune out the web for a bit. The divisiveness was getting too much. Had a bunch of unexpected changes but not for the bad, just life things. We are raising someone else’s kid now so just minor change, I mean taking on another young life you only have to adjust everything but his family was being persecuted in another country so off we went.

Prior to that I had a few members here assist me with a Rolex. I just wanted a simple DJ and planned to buy vintage. Two factors influenced this my mother wanted to buy me one when she was in a nursing home, I was her POA didn’t think it was appropriate so I lied to mom (forgive me) and told her I had it and thanked her. After she passed that always kind of bothered me. I decided to get new even though I couldn’t obtain the exact configuration I liked. It was almost a miglaus as I always like when people show them here, even had a Daytona in my cart as I thought that was the ultimate maintain value but frig if you don’t sell much what big a deal is that in the kinda kinda frivolous watch game. So squandered some cash I did with a new DJ. I have the oyster bracelet which is a scratch magnet but I like the look.

I’m trying to obtain a jubilee from a friend who has an extra but he’s grasping it with both hands at the moment.

It has a nice solid feel. Not flashy (imo) I like the second hand movement and damn how the date pops in the cyclops really nails it. The date being divisive for some people with watches but I use the function numerous times a day due to a porous memory.

The watch also commentates surviving a medical event I was damn near written off for. I was laying in the ICU 15 months or however long ago saying if I make it through this I’m getting a Rolex or other nice watch.

Ran into a bit of an issue as when you start spending this amount on watches it really opens up more choices and I know I’m still in the playground with this one. But I was looking at every omega, Cartier, grand seiko, Ming etc it was paralysis by analysis for months. Finely boiled down to my mother.

Sorry the sun has set, no good out door pictures. It’s just a watch anyway. Hope all are well.

This is the best, and sportiest, DJ configuration in my opinion.

Interesting. I was looking at the Rolex sub on Reddit and there was a thread bashing this configuration. I do like the fluted look but I think it’s just a touch blingy certainly not bad. I did have a couple dial color options but the Rolex black is just so deep I like the absence of light. Besides I only have a couple black dials.

Funny I was walk-in to the post office get some work done for people, rough part of town. Someone asked me for the time. Had it come from behind I probably would have reacted but the rather ruffed up lookin guy was quick paced coming at me probably trying to get the bus.

I think the Rolex robbery stories got to me.

This is my favourite modern DJ configuration. It’s also the sportiest with the black dial, oyster bracelet and smooth bezel. Makes it a real contender with the Explorer but better because it has a date function. I’d rather this than a fluted, shiny example with a Jubilee.

Those stories are way overblown and are generally in tourist areas with spotters and such. That said, I still wear rollies when I travel but nothin blingy. Not my taste!

IMO that’s the perfect Datejust … understated and sporty. Great story.

Hey thanks Larry that means much coming from you and of course everyone else’s comments much appreciated. I do like it more and more although the availability of used DJ is damn near endless and makes sense financially in many cases for a watch that has instant sentimental and although not typical a “milestone” watch getting new just leaves out so many potential problems I’ve had with a few vintage buys. I’m not done with vintage I just didn’t want to buy one and that have it in service for months.

I was actually stuck between these two Rolexes at the end but shipping was like 75 bucks which is insane.
Roger’s 1.5 million Daytona would have looked great on me but that shipping cost was just too much.

Last night my wife hit the DJ with a frying pan as she was trying to help me serve. It was of course unintentional but I was so sure she got the bezel I expected to see my first major “ I was here mark but no visible damage. It was just kinda funny as she has been telling me to becareful with it keep it “new” but I told her as you just saw weird things can happen at anytime watches get worn you can’t keep them new unless you keep it in a case.

I like the “bullet proof movement” I was looking at some other makers with display backs as I really appreciate viewing and seeing an intricate finished movement but in this case reliability and longevity was my main thing. The poor young guy we had to take in had a really rough go and I’m hoping to hand it on to him down the line. I feel bad for kids who had to suffer for no fault of their own we adults understand it’s just part of life at times but kids don’t get that.

Anyway sorry rambled again. I’m trying to just not look at watches for a while but this darn DJ reignited my appreciation for these time measuring machines we wear I was afraid of that. Maybe I’ll sneak in a microbrand in a little while.
