Hi all, I've been lurking for a while now and always been an Omega fan, and welcome your thoughts on the advice I've given my brother..
Firstly, Many thanks to dsio / Ashley for posting this cool blue dial Driver's Variant Chronostop watch on 'Recommended Vintage OMEGA WATCHES (only) On EBAY' and sharing his knowledge;-

Omega Geneve Chronostop Blue Dial Cal 865 Driver's variant going no reserve I wrote about these here: https://stories.omegaforums.net/chronostop-part-1-geneve-chronostop-rare-japanese-variants/ https://www.ebay.com/itm/326611348442

My brother loves (and drives.. me nuts) about classic cars. So when I showed him the Driver's Variant Chronostop watch around 2/3 years ago, the search began..

I've been looking for a blue dial version for a while, and when I saw this one, I said he had to go for it. As the Dial looks in excellent condition, and the lume appears nicely aged, and fully in tact. The case also looks good, there are of course a couple of dinks, and overall appears original and unpolished..

So he ended up bidding $725 USD incl shipping to the UK - or around £630 GBP with VAT, duties.

I'm not sure if I'm linking these correctly, however Davidt wrote; “Overwound” is what people who don’t understand watches say when the mainspring has broken or it is in dire need of a service.

This was exactly the same advice I gave to to my brother; and based on the movement looking clean, and the screw heads being undamaged. When it arrives the watch will go straight to Simon Freese in UK for a full service.

In the meantime, have I given my brother sound advice? and has he paid good / fair price..?

Thanks

IN the end, I think he financially comes out worse there after repair price wise. ($700 + ~$300 for a service, when a 'working' and perhaps 'lightly serviced' one is ~$900).

That said, that movement is in fantastic shape, and the watch itself is lovely, I think he'll have a great time with it. So in the end, he didn't get a 'deal', but he'll get a fantastic watch that he can love and admire for a very long time at what ended up being a reasonable price.

As far as 'overwound', that is typically what that means, though whether or not the ebay seller knows enough to know that is the case, is just guessing, or there is more wrong with it, you won't know until it gets out of service.

I think the price is very fair if he really likes the watch.
1st it’s an uncommon color
2nd it’s a driver version!
3rd it comes with an omega bracelet
4th no state sales tax?!
5th the lume is perfect… which is uncommon for chronostops.

Over 1k is expected after service. 1.5k-2k is what dealers would charge.

Link me another blue chronostop… oh wait.

So yea this was a great purchase!

Ah, wasn't aware the blue was particularly rare.

I saw quite a few of these recently sold in other colors + listed for sub-1k. Dealers that list that high seem to keep them a while 😀 I saw quite a few driver chronostops at the watch show here a few weeks ago and they were all starting at about $1k (with negotiation expected), so I figured that as a value.

The blue dial is one of the least common and most desirable colors and the drivers variant is less common than the regular variant.

UK prices are typically significantly higher than US prices and frankly this one went a fair ways under market for what it is, which is both very hard to find and quite attractive.

Thanks for these comments.. So I'd been looking for around 3 years - and bid on some black / grey dials along the way - however this is the first blue dial I'd seen for sale in available in the UK and is by far the most attractive dial variation (and of course, it had to be a driver!)

Plus, as omegawatchlover kindly wrote, '5th the lume is perfect… which is uncommon for chronostops'.

My brother is very happy;-)

I really like that bracelet and it looks like you've got all the micro adjustments left in the clasp, so it hopefully it will fit well. Congrats on a nice watch.

I would suggest reading the Simon Freese thread before making a decision about servicing.

Agree. There are other UK watchmakers such as Mitka, Watchguy and Alexander James (AJWSL) I’d consider.

In my experience, Simon Freese has always offered excellent service and also provided invaluable advice before committing to buy in the past..

Lots of people had this experience, until they didn't. I have recommended him many times myself. I think people are just trying to make you aware that lately things have not been as smooth as they have in the past. This is worth a read, but of course who you choose is completely up to you...

As someone who had a driver’s variant previously, and not a blue one, I’m gonna second these points. A great find for your brother!

Seconding this as well.

I expect this has been relumed since the colors of of lume on hour markers and hands are different. But it’s totally fine IMO to relume. I did it recently to my 145.010

Really.... it never even crossed my mind this may be a relume! I thought the Dial looked in excellent condition, and the lume appeared nicely aged, and 100% in tact.

I understood the hands and the dial were manufactured separately in the late 1960's ands therefore it was actually a good sign if the lume did not match - ie. evidence that the watch had not been relumed..

There were also blue and green in that batch but I failed to purchase. Yours is nice and the bracelet is a plus.

Chronostop Driver 145.010 just arrived smoothly via eBay Global shipping. The blue dial and lume appears to be in pristine condition. It definitely needs a clean and a service. But it will clean up...
