I feel depressed

So, lately I've been feeling very depressed.

It all started on the 9th of November when I went to a Karate seminar and I told my instructor I didn't want to participate in the competition they were holding. Apparently, he took that as a "personal insult and embarrassment" and seriously lost his temper with me. His behaviour was so egregious that I reported him to the police.

Then I got coerced into dropping the police report on the promise of reconciliation and was banned anyway.

I recently sued them for victimisation under the Equality Act 2010 in Scotland, and as part of their defence statement they released a lot of new details that I was unaware of.

For example, a guy I thought was my friend was actually having secret conversations with the instructor discussing how to get me to drop the case and then ban me afterwards. My online posts were being deanonymised and used against me. When I complained to the head of the organisation in Scotland I got told that this guy "acted in good faith" and they were not taking any action against him.

On top of that, I sold my house and used some of the money to start a business, which completely flopped. Now I'm looking for a job and struggling big time. I still have enough money to last approximately 1.5 years, but I've basically been unemployed for a year and it's starting to take a toll on my mental health.

I did just do an interview with a French company called Plasseraud IP to start working as a European Patent Attorney in Paris. However, they've arranged a follow-up call to tell me the result, and I'm not really sure I can face being told on a video call that I didn't get the job.

I just wanted to talk to some people here about it, and vent a little bit.

Yes looks like a tough time. As a former French president said 'Les emmerdes, ça vole toujours en escadrille" which google translate as "Troubles always come in droves"...

I hope venting a bit is helping. There's nothing wrong to that and I like to see OF as a community in which you can do so. I think others have used it that way in the past and nothing wrong came from it.

I've never been good at cheering up people but I really wish you will 'navigate' this period and finally comes through to the other (brighter) side. Good luck with you call ! At the very least, they already considered your application seriously, did interview you and do come back to you. It could also be a good sign. Keep the faith.

My advice is always to talk to someone, even if it’s posting on a thread of anonymous people. So in my book, you’re doing good just reaching out. But for lawyers, I recommend going a step further. The legal profession is based on an adversarial framework. It’s also based on“issue spotting“ which in my experience means that good lawyers are also people prone to pessimism and seeing the downside of everything. See if you can find additional forums to discuss this with lawyers or people set up to help lawyers deal with depression and anxiety.

Finally, the worst thing the human mind does in a situation like this is trick itself. Just the uncertainty of the follow up call with that job opportunity is itself having an effect. Having the follow up call and getting past that uncertainty will free your mind to decide on the next step. I’ve been through situations like this and, for me, the after effect of hearing bad news is never as bad in reality as I feared it would be in anticipation.

And you don’t know it’s bad news yet. it’s like Schrodinger‘s cat. Until you know more, let it also be good news as well.

It might seem tough and insurmountable at times when you're going through things like this, especially when it's multiple things at once. But once you get to the other side and reflect back, you realize any situation adds stress and takes a mental toll.

Wish you the best of luck and talking through it with someone can definitely help shift your focus and get your frustrations out.

Depression can bring anyone down, regardless of circumstances. Everything can be going great on paper but we can still feel depressed.

You have several challenges that should make you feel low. But not keep you down.

You're still in the ring. You're still fighting. Just the fact that you can qualify for a European Patent Attorney is laudable. You have a unique set of skills. Very impressive.

Hiring decisions are unpredictable. If you made it to the interview it often means you could do the work. After that, it can just be how the company feels about how you fit. It doesn't mean the other people are more qualified.

I hope you get the job. But if you don't, it just means that group of people weren't right for you. Keep applying and you'll find your people. It's okay to feel bad. But not stay feeling bad. Talking to a doctor can help too. Mood stabilizers might help, or they might share different ways to think through your current challenges. And walk, get out of the house.

Pictures of walks!

So sorry to hear you are struggling. As the others have stated exercising and talking to family members or friends can greatly help. However, if you feel you need to seek help from a medical professional to get over this rough patch you should certainly consider that. Remember what you are experiencing is a temporary setback it is not a permanent situation. Take one positive step at a time each day and don't allow yourself to feel overwhelmed. You can and will feel better.

Please get yourself to a therapist. I’ve done, many people I know do it. There is a lot to unpack in your post. Hang in there and it will get better. My wife’s uncle pulled me aside years ago when I’d lost my job 3 years after being promoted and moving my family halfway across the country. “Make a s..t list. Put these people on it and move on with your life. “ it was great advice. I also sought therapy because I felt like I’d been thrown from a moving car. My career recovered, thrived and now i am a happy retiree.

Please be kind to yourself and realize that everyone has difficult chapters to go through in life and at times they feel interminable.

You can and will get through this. One second at a time. One minute at a time. One hour at a time. One day at a time.
The human spirit is indomitable, and I can tell you from personal experience, often times -- the greatest challenges of my life that have made me want to give up -- on the other side has been the best opportunities and experiences that has made those impossible times worthwhile.

You're not alone. You can message me if you'd like to talk.

I'm so sorry to hear that you've been feeling this way; but glad that you've felt comfortable enough to reach out here

I'd second seeking out a therapist, though I know from personal experience that it is a difficult process to admit that you could use help - particularly for someone used to puzzling through hard problems themselves and having been taught to be 'self-reliant'

I'd recommend Psychology Today as a good place to start, which should have many listings of therapists, which you can sort through to find a good fit:

https://www.psychologytoday.com/gb/counselling

I've also found the directories of psychology - or, in the medical school, psychiatry - departments at local universities, to be a good place to look through.

Please feel free to message me as well, if you need someone to talk to.

Fishing is the best therapy.

Go fishing with someone. Take a charter. Just go fishing.

The amount of times I have had another guy in a boat and had a good chat.

Gives someone a chance to open up and loose some baggage. The amount of times someone has thanked me for the day for more than the fishing.

((And I will tell you I have heard more than one person divulging 10x more heavier situations than yourself…..not taking anything from your situation 😉))

Just go fishing 🎣 trust me.
