Had to share this. Walked into the local Goldsmiths today for a browse and in there was a manager gently trying to explain Rolex’s “exclusivity” to two irritated-looking young guys. Went back out to the shop window and glittering away there were a black sub and a GMT-II. Underneath, where the prices normally are, was the retail equivalent of a straight middle finger - For Exhibition Only!!

I’ve heard that Rolex has started to supply exhibition only watches to dealers - the case sans movement. Apparently, Rolex is finally getting annoyed that their dealer cases are empty of merchandise. Wonder if that’s what these were?

Seems silly to advertise watches you don’t have for sale.

No idea, but to me the whole setup resembled a really crap museum where the gift shop items outnumbered the exhibits.

After 1090 posts, I wonder if the OP any closer to understanding the SS rolex shortage or is it still a mystery?

Don't think he cares anymore. Some pages back, I recall reading that he got his Rolex.

That’s my goal in life now.
To work in a Rolex Boutique where you don’t have to do stuff all and get paid.

Hell yeah, letting people down all day sounds fun 😁😁

Could be a professional Noper…
How cool filling out your first form.👍
Occupation = Noper

“Got any Subs” “NOPE”
“Got any GMTs” “NOPE”
“How about a Daytona” “NOPE”
“Ok will settle for a Explorer” “NOPE”

Background: I'm a new Omega fanboy and have been admiring my co-workers vintage Pepsi. When I enquired about the cost/availability of one at my local AD I was nearly laughed out of the store.

So I went home and starting research Rolex and the SS "shortage" issue on the rolex forum but I still don't understand the rolex craze. I think they are beautiful watches, have amazing functionality, history, and style. However, EVEN if only paying retail for a submariner, why would I pay $7.5k when I could get a seamaster for $4k? Not to mention the insane grey market prices on the submariner and GMT's!

People keep mentioning a Rolex bubble, but it seems like that is non-sense. Even the 1 million produced by Rolex will not adequately supply the demand in China, with it's exponentially growing middle class.

I guess my question is, why are people buying into the hype and paying double/triple retail for these SS watches!? When you get into the $15-20k price range it seems like there are much better watches you could spend that money on!

Please educate me!
Not sure, movie, web hype....::stirthepot::
But, agree that it is nutsoid!
You beter know some history on old Rolexes.
People wear them for 20 to 30 years.
Never have them serviced, don't fix it if ain't broke.
Mainspring barrels worn out, center wheel plate hole is u shaped..... pivot 8 shap or V
Had a Professional persons Rolex sub come in no sevice 30 years.
After that adventure, anything real bad or not seviced on regular bases went back to Rolex.
A neighbor gave me his Rolex, worn out to beat the drum. [ DANNY SELL IT ]
Nope father gave it to him NFS.
Old Rolex, maybe represents Old Money.
Don't run with the turds.....::facepalm1::
Patek AP, Jager LeColtre, Zenith, Choppard, Girrard Parregue, need support too
And some beautiful movements. Don't foget the Germans, Glashute, A Lange & Sohne...

I somehow got the sub or gmt demand, but really dont understand the hype behind the Oyster perpetual line at all, the dial color, look punky?

Rolex knew they were popular when they sued the company in California that was redialing older Rolex watches and reselling them. They knew they already had the market for these models, so they shut down the competition, and made their own - the other company had done the market research for them.

I do wonder when I look at the cost of that, and what you actually get - crazy...

Is there an actual Rolex museum? Like the Omega one? Because if so, I can’t help but wonder if there are in fact prices on the exhibits therein…

What are the grey market prices for display Daytona’s 😁

I wonder if Display-tonas will become good long term investments. A thread…
