I don't understand the recent Rolex SS craze/shortage. What am I missing?

If the sellers are unrelenting in price I suspect they are turning over inventory. Either that or they are masochists who search out and buy these New/Unworn watches with little chance of getting the asking price. That would not be a good business model.

Okay - so I say “unrelenting” in the abstract since I don’t contact the sellers and document the realized prices. But abstractly list prices have been on the rise for awhile.
What I’m agreeing with is the fact that a quick search of Chrono24 shows 4,500 Rolex Submariner Date models (all years and materials). Somehow that seems, to me at least, there is plenty of supply.
I speculate there are other forces at work outside of supply and demand. Like unspoken collusion that the investment should rise year over year. I can not pinpoint what but it simply begs the question:
Why do prices continue to rise even though there is so much supply out there?

Regular price increases by Rolex is one part of the equation that explains steady overall increase, no?
For vintage watches, it is a bit more clear: fixed amount of units but more and more buyers possibly interested as the hobby has been promoted, also as a "new investment tool"?

And just dwelling on the shear numbers for sale for one more post...there’s only 471 Timex listed for sale on Chrono24. Where’s the supply/demand prices on these???
They should either be 10x the price of a Rolex OR only 3-4 people want to buy one.

Please show your work RE thousands of currently-offered at AD SS GMTs that are both (a) for sale, and (b) have been sitting unsold “a long time” (and what you consider to be a long time).

The topic at issue regards SS GMT watches that can still be purchased at MSRP (from an AD/boutique), not discontinued models.

The market dynamics for discontinued models that can only be had second hand are another matter.

I just stopped by my AD and he assured me Rolex is now cranking them out, and demand should start getting met. I told him that was odd since I haven’t gotten a call from him on any of them...

I'm in the Austin, San Antonio general area, but get to Houston fairly often, too. I'd like to get to know this magical AD as well.

My dear departed grandma always said, 'there is always room for one more'. Texas is a big place. And a Rolex is colloquially known as a Texas Timex, should be plenty to go around if Rolex is now cranking them out.

No BS: as you were typing your response, I just got a text message from a friend of mine in Houston (not a watch guy), which text reads: “hey man, a coworker of mine wants to buy her husband a submariner for his birthday - you know where she can get the best price?”

Maybe @southtexas can help her out too!

I stopped by an AD this week and hit it off with the salesperson. Walked out with this. I still love my 4 Omegas, but this piece is beautiful. I would never pay the gray market price but retail was ok!

Maybe the rumors are true, they have finally upped production, as what they where trying to do was starting to backfire.

Purely anecdotal but if you look at the FS section here and at places like DSW there are suddenly a lot of brand new, sealed Subs on the market.

Wonder, though, if they’re primarily no-dates? The posts above were no-dates, and in the FS section I’ve casually noticed no-dates. Still a healthy up-charge of 25% over MSRP, though.
