I don't understand the recent Rolex SS craze/shortage. What am I missing?

Quite a few pre-owned ones at Tourneau in Vegas. They even had a Daytona and modern sub.
As far as the new ones - DJs and DDs only...

My local AD has several used Subs (both older and modern fat lug) and modern Explorers. Even had a moder-ish GMT and a 1675. Not sure why any would feel the need to wait when the used case was flush.

Maybe because their quantity is limited which means they will be collectible pieces in the future?

I assume the demand is driven by a combination of strong brand value and a strong growth in wealthy people - about 6% CAGR.

Great infographics. Thanks for sharing

Whether Rolex is intentionally constraining production or simply letting demand growth outpace supply, their watches are also subject to changing tastes. You can buy two tone gold versions of the Zenith Daytona for less than half what the stainless steel version costs. Similarly white gold Daytonas sell at a discount compared to their stainless equivalent.

It is a world driven by fashion - and it will change, likely sooner than we think.

Seems more like an issue with pricing than supply. Anyone can buy--at an insane premium--as many new SS sports watches as they'd like.

Nope, they are not that rare.

Hi there. What do you mean with "not rare"? You saying they are easy to find and one can go to an authorized Rolex dealership and simply buy one?

Nothing is produced in limited numbers. ALL steel models from Rolex are in constant production for significant periods of time.

Yes, that I am aware of. I guess the word "rare" is not the appropriate one. What I meant is that in the US is almost impossible to find one at the AD store.

Also in Australia impossible. But on Reddit some people reported some new Subs and sea dwellers in the South of France and I was just in Northern Italy where some AD had some new ones eg the previous yacht master model, and the explorer.

Eve Eve
Yesterday was out in town and walked by both Rolex Boutiques, checked the windows and to my surprise this time both had an Explorer at the show window. I am wondering if rolex supplies more ss sport models now.
The Zurich airport store had a display like that but they said they were only for show, not real watches.....

I'm generally an Omega/Seiko or GS/TAG Heuer person for new stuff, but do admire Rolexes and will peruse an AD if I happen to be around one. That's really neither here nor there, but about 6-7 months ago I had a very strange experience.

I had gone into a jeweler on the south side of my then-city to see a pre-owned Seamaster they'd called me about. I decided against it, but took a look at their other offerings while there. To even my relatively inexperienced surprise they had a date Submariner, a GMT II, an Explorer II, and two Yachtmasters, all new. The dealer, whom I had known for a while but never bought a Rolex from, made me the following offer: "Three of those were for guys on my wait-list who changed their mind. The white face Yachtmaster i've had a while and I'll take 1,500 hundred off the MSRP if you take it this week. I'll be honest, if I have this many sport models sitting around very long people are going to think something is wrong."

I didn't have those kind of funds anyway, said so, and we left with no bad feelings. I still have no idea what kind of weird fluke that experience was, but for knowing that dealer as long as I have, I sure wish I'd been able to seize the moment. He too now can't keep SS Sports in stock, and still gives me a (deserved) hard time about it when I do get to see him...and also still won't tell me what he meant by 'people will think something is wrong.'

Wanted to buy a SD Deep Blue, but found nothing but jewel encrusted Datejusts and a pair of YG Yachtmaster at the Rolex AD in Nassau Bahamas - they got upset that I was taking pics and I was asked to stop and leave (took one last spy pic just to spite them). They blamed the lack of supply on the grey market for buying up all the stock and selling for a profit, which I pointed out didn't explain why they haven't received a Sub, SD, or GMT from Rolex in weeks.

These pictures are somewhat redolent of a display case in a Soviet-era shop; they don't have much stock available and certainly nothing you'd want to buy, but if you really are that desperate you'll take anything at all and be grateful for it!
