I Can Only Keep One…Help Me Decide!

Hello all!

I have a dilemma that I need help with.

I currently have two modern Omegas, a Speedmaster Professional 1861 Hesalite and an SMPc 41mm in blue. For reasons I won’t get into, I only have room in my collection for one luxury timepiece, and I need to get rid of one of the aforementioned pieces.

I currently wear both about equally, so that doesn’t help my decision. I work in healthcare, but have a desk job, so both are plenty durable and suitable for the job. I just can’t seem to edge one out over the other!

Which would you choose to sell if you had to? I absolutely do not have the option to keep both, unfortunately.

Thanks!

SMPc should leave, full disclosure I dislike the helium valve.

Objectively, the SMPc is more versatile and more watch for the money than the Speedmaster, but it all comes down to which one appeals to you the most when you wear it.

It depends how quickly you need the sale. Why not sell both and whichever goes first then decides for you - and you double your chances to make a quick sale / you can then withdraw the other.
Both are nice watches to have but I agree with @gbesq the SMP covers more bases and the fact you have asked the question means you don’t have the full Speedy bug yet (no shame in that)

At the end of the day, which puts a bigger smile on your face when putting it on and has the most memories for you?

Both are nice pieces and both will sell but as @gbesq mentions, sell the one that doesn't appeals the most.

A tough decision either way, best of luck.

If it were my only watch, I would keep the SMPc due to its ability to gada. If you have other watches in your collection then I’d take the Speedmaster all day.

Tough call, but I'd at least consider your realistic use cases. If you live near the water and avail yourself of boating/diving/swimming opportunities, obviously keep the SMPc. I'm still and will probably always be a contrarian who thinks you can do nearly anything with a Speedy (except swim) and it is very versatile; especially if you buy a few straps and are willing to change it up for the occasion.

Of the two, I’d keep the Speedmaster. If you can, I’d really try to see if there was any possibility to keep both. They complement each other nicely. Some days I wish that I would’ve kept more of the watches that I sold because I “had” to sell them.

It depends in part on the other contents of your watch box. If you have another chronograph, you may want to part with the Speedy and keep the Diver. On the other hand, if you have another watch suitable for wearing around water, keep the Speedmaster.

It’s not clear which Seamaster Pro you have - the 2012-2017 version, or the post-2018 version. But if you are selling for financial reasons, it’s a pretty easy decision: sell the one you’ll get more money for. That will likely be the Speedmaster.

Speedmasters cost more to service and there's more inside to go wrong, not that you necessarily have to worry about that.

I bought a Speedmaster years ago instead of the Seamaster I really wanted. Sold the Speedmaster 20 years later and bought the Seamaster.

Both watches are really good but I'd go with the SMPc.

I think that it's important to distinguish between the 2012-2017 version of the SMPc and the 2018-present version, but not for financial reasons. I assume that you have the 2012-2017 version because you mentioned that it's 41mm. If so, I would consider you fortunate because while the "new" version is a great watch, it lost some features that the "old" version has - the "no waves" dial on the old version is stunning, especially in black, it has an applied logo (the new version is printed), it has a smaller, less obtrusive HE valve, and a beautiful large hippocampus engraving on the case back (the new version replaced that with a sapphire display case back so that you can see the movement). The old version is also a bit smaller, a bit thinner, dressier and less brash than the new model. When compared to the 1861 Speedmaster, either version of the SMPc has certain advantages: a superior co-axial movement with a hacking feature, a rotating ceramic bezel (which is a lot more resistant to damage than the fixed aluminium bezel on the Speedy), a sapphire crystal, a screw down crown and water resistance to 300m, a date window and a quickset date feature, better lume (two colors and brighter), better bracelet (in my opinion) and it's less expensive to service. The Speedmaster is a great watch (I have two of them), but unless you really need a chronograph, the SMPc is more watch for the money and more versatile.

Listen to your heart. It's cliché yes, but true. Forget about practically. Which one do you enjoy looking at more on your wrist? We don't by these watches because they are practical. We buy them because of the way we feel when we wear them and when we look at them.

If you do not favour either watch, I think this is a good way to approach your dilemma.

Personally, I’d take the Speedmaster every day of the week fwiw.

You're going to get opinions all over the board. Do you REALLY need a bunch of strangers on a watch forum to tell you what to do? Hope you don't have remorse with your decision. There's absolutely no way you can keep both?
