How often do you see ANY nice watch in the wild?

This week started with some work travel.

On the flight out, one of the pilots had a speedy so I knew I was in good hands.

On the flight back a fellow passenger had a date just with roulette date wheel.

Then toward the end of the week saw a sub at a community picnic.

I’m in Portsmouth, UK as a band I’m in is on a two week tour. Before our show last night, I wandered around South Sea and popped into a local bike shop as I’m always interested in what’s new in road bikes.

Almost immediately, the owner inquired, “is that a Black Bay GMT?” I said yes, and he mentioned he had one as well, along with a BB58. Needless to say, the next few minutes were not focused on bicycles.

(I am absolutely loving it here. Canadians often hear how polite we are. Given the kindness, generosity, and the exceptionally warm welcome we’ve enjoyed in England, I must say we have some pretty strong competition here across the pond.)

Submariner on the beach this morning.

Whilst doing an early morning beach walk with the dog this morning we ended up chatting to a couple with 2 golden retrievers, whilst the dogs raced around I spotted that the guy was wearing a Submariner and his wife had an Apple Watch, I commented about his Sub, he was a little bit reticent at first then he spotted my Panerai and we had a good chat about watches as we walked along the beach.

I just got back from my son's tournament in Chicago. Saw a few subs, few datejusts, saw an AP RO 15000ST, 116500 Black Ceramic, a 126710 BLRO on a oyster, 116503 pikachu, and a 16710 faded bezel BLRO. Surprisingly didn't spot any Omegas.

Sporting events are like airports and amusement parks. All usually see a high concentration of interesting watches.

I logged on to ask what watch I should wear to the LA Zoo. I decided to go with my Omega Fat Arrow since it kind of reminds me of a field watch and why not a field watch to the zoo. I'll be sure to look out for interesting watches.

Sensible choice.

I attended a pool party today and another guest had a sub. Wonder if he paired his watch to the event.

I know nothing about Rolex Subs but thought about the size of it on his wrist. I discover it’s either 40 or 41 mm.
I’d have to wear a 33mm watch for it to fit my wrist like it fits his 😯

Love your pics. How do you get such good shots? Is it a mobile phone camera you're using? At that sort of range your subjects must surely know you're stalking them 🤣

One time I saw one of those Russian designed (I think) with the faces on them but tbh the guy wearing it pointed it out to me. I realize no one cares what I’m wearing and tbh I don’t really care what someone else is wearing unless a friendly watch conversation comes about organically. From 20 ft many Rolex look like seikos to me, could be my bad eyesight.

It’s usually my new King Seiko (newer) that attracts fellow watch nerds or a general comment from someone. It’s has also led to several brief watch talks which I enjoy. It does seem a few grand seikos I’m able to pick out and if the person seems receptive I’ll compliment him.

People do like to show their fake watches for whatever reason sometimes I ask why most of the time I can’t be bothered.

I’m always in some busy setting standing or sitting around with nothing much else to do. Airport waiting to board. Coffee shop waiting for order. Kids sporting event waiting for my kid to start. And so on.

It’s always my camera phone and always lucky if the conditions, lighting, distance, etc are favorable. I’ve gotten some okay zoom shots but everyone has to be sitting around pretty still with good lighting. If I get what look like decent close ups, I’m usually in a venue with lots of seating like a theatre or sporting arena with lots people sitting close to one another. An example of a time I saw lots of watches but couldn’t get a decent snap was in line for ride at an amusement park. Too much stop and go movement and everyone shuffling around, plus I’m usually with friends and family engaged in conversation to combat the boredom rather than sitting around by myself.

Often the settings where I get good pics aren’t conducive to conversation. If they were I might ask a person about the watch they’re wearing since I’m usually wearing an interesting (to me) watch most of the time that I would be happy to chat about. Tho I am a touch on the introverted side.

Funny example was when I was traveling alone for business not long ago. Everyone but one person in my row on the airplane was wearing an interesting watch. I had my Japan Racing Speedy, the guy across the isle had a Date Just and the women on the other side of him had a Tank. The guy next to me on my side of the isle was the one without—he had a smart watch. I got a pic of the Date Just because it was right across the isle staring me in the face but the guy was plugged into his iPad zoned out and there wasn’t a chance to ask him about it. The lady with the tank was on the other side of him but the lighting in the plane wasn’t good enough to get a zoom pic.

At the very end of the flight when waiting to deplane, the smart watch guy next to me asked about my watch. He said he recognized Omega as a nice watch brand but hadn’t seen one with “cool colors” like mine.

It doesn't matter how surupticius you are its always going to look bad secretly taking shots of other people's watches like a spotter for a criminal watch gang or worse a stalker with bodily fetishs with your cellphone. Just go all out and use this sought of set up, you'll always get the shot and might even be mistaken as a member of the paparazzi not the low life fetishist watch spotter that you are. Either way you will be reviled and your character slandered or physical confrontation. Just admit it we watch collectors are a dubious bunch of watch freaks.
