Found this at a bar over the summer! The guy was nice enough to take it off so I could take a picture of it!

I generally see something interesting about every day. I work at a Mercedes Benz dealership. They generally notice whatever I’m wearing that day first.

That's cool but also a sign of someone with too much money. Do you pay them Harvard tuition or something?

Ophthalmology in general pays pretty well, and cataract surgery is a money spinner. These days it's a 20 minute procedure that will earn you at least AUD$1500 a pop. A skilled surgeon could easily do 10 in one afternoon.

lol I definitely got in the wrong business. I was talking to one of the staff there and depending on the time of year it varies. That day though wasn’t any special holiday or big vacation season just an October day. They had 70 dogs there for daycare. Depending on the package you get it can be from $32-40 a dog (big or small is the same) a day. I only take mine 1-2 a week, most others do 3 a week. They also board dogs which is about $80-140 a dog. A couple other day cares are the same price and then there a some higher. We don’t have kids, just two crazy Jack Russell mixes that are either sleeping or at a level 10 so it’s a good outlet for them.

I don’t begrudge them for purchasing a luxury watch, but does it have to be THAT watch?

That's what I meant. That one says "I have enough to buy a whimsical Rolex".

I talked to a guy in his forties with a really old basic digital Casio. He said he had bought it as a student and never had replaced it as it worked fine. As retired, I don't move in circles where expensive watches would be worn. 'Young people' use phones.

That depends. Young professionals with high incomes haven’t rejected luxury watches in favor of iPhones and Apple Watches. I frequently see young lawyers in court and in meetings wearing luxury Swiss watches. They remain a status symbol for those who can afford them.

My Speedmaster has only been recognized in the wild once or twice over many years... and the fact that it is vintage, never recognized.

It's interesting how we parse out details of these watches, but how many people in the world would recognize the short and fat pushers of a 105.012 or the facets of a CB case?

Mechanical watches haven't been relevant for function since the quartz crisis, and quartz watches haven't been relevant for function since the widespread adoption of the mobile phone. I'm in my early 30's now so I guess I don't qualify as young any more, but when I got into watches in my late teens, smart phones were already ubiquitous. The iPhone had been out for years. It's not just about telling time, or the watch industry would have died out by the 00's.

Only other watch enthusiasts. I've had more people comment on my Casio F-91W than my Omegas. Impressing other people is very far down the list of reasons I love watches.

Agree, one of the reasons I like vintage watches over modern watches is the subtlety. It takes more effort to know what you have, you can't just walk into a grey market dealer and plonk down cash for a flashy watch.

Hopefully I'll never end up in court.

Ran into a guy at a Portland restaurant who complimented my Summer Blue. When I asked him what he was wearing it turned out to be a 1983 tudor sub with a beautifully patina'd dial.

Definitely the coolest "in-the-wild" interaction I've had with a total stranger.

A rare one for me.
From a meeting today, myself and both of the external presenters. My -65, a 3861 and a moonswatch.
