My boss is wearing his Rolex GMT Master II day in, day out. It's his only serious watch. He's not a collector but bought it as a reward from a hard working period.
A technical consultant is wearing a Speedy from his birth year. That's about it, but at my workplace, people mostly wear 'modern' tool watches.
A friend of mine is sporting a datejust. That's as nice as it gets. Most wear an Apple watch...
Spotted a Rolex smurf in the elevator in my client's office one time - had a brief convo about it. Overall though luxury watches I find fairly rare, even Rolexes. Maybe its just in Australia, it feels like 99% of people don't own any luxury watch. To be fair I've been to hong kong and many more people (wait staff at cafes for example) have luxury watches on, so maybe it varies across different cities around the world.
Seldom if ever... out and about I see either no wristwatches being worn or a sea of Apple & Fitbit.
On a slightly more voyeuristic note: my wife is an RN so she's often sending me photos via text during her shifts at the hospital of various watches the surgeons leave in the break room while they're off in the OR: 70% roughly are Apple, 20% Rolex and the remainder Breitling/Seiko/JLC.
She did work along side an Ortho doc who frequently wore a VC Overseas when we lived in NYC... he was pulling down "F*** You" money (his phrase) and would leave it on the counter in PACU. When I attended a Unit Xmas party with my wife he was there and asked him about not only the watch but his habit of leaving it wherever in plain sight -- he replied, "I don't give a shit if someone steals it I can buy another with a half hour of my surgical fees." An arrogant idiot but I did like that watch.
I see a lot of Rolexes but not much else. I did have to replace a battery a while back and the young man at auto zone who was replacing my battery was like "hey nice Oris" and proceeded to show me and tell me all about his Sinn (U50 I think). His joy and enthusiasm was a breath of fresh air.
Had lunch with our son-in-law’s parents today, discovered that he’s also a watch fan when I noticed his gorgeous vintage Zodiac GMT. We both have a grandfather’s WWII issue watch as well, but his is an Omega and mine is an Elgin. Good conversation ensued.
Went hiking in Palm Springs today and crossed paths with a guy just casually wearing a 5513 while traversing some rocky terrain. First time I've seen one of those in the wild.
At the F1 and the person sitting next to me had a sub, sorry about the poor pic with my SMP
And the this snoopy a few rows away
Attention @bdp your mission this weekend is to photograph the racing, and all the old racing cars. Do not get distracted. You're easier led astray than Bond with his women. Do try to stick to your assigned task
Spotted these two beauties on older gentlemen. Both are red subs! The man with the shorts was-in a Italian deli, chicago. He said he bought it in 1975, for about $500, he was a retired lawyer. The other guy got his as a gift from his dad. Purchased in the early 70’s, he was a vendor selling antique motorcycles, and parts, at a swap meet in Iowa.
Went for lunch today with a service provider, who was wearing a white faced Aqua Terra, and then for coffee with a client who had just had his Rolex Datejust from 2011 back from service (it looked stunning). Mostly I don't see any. A colleague in my office has a sapphire sandwich or bubble DeVille that he got from his wife as a wedding present, which he alternates with a Tudor North Flag, but that's about it.
most people I work with wear Apple watches. at my prev employer the Mkt manager was a watch nerd so i did get to see his Nomos, Speedy reduced, JDM Citizen. And, showed him some of mine.
after the pandemic working from home has made is very hard to get an opportunity to see nice mechanical watches on others' wrists....
Don’t know if it counts as “in the wild” but went to my yearly Gastroenterologist visit. He was wearing a newish Aqua Terra 41mm, white dial with the rose gold bezel. Pretty sure he was wearing an Apple Watch last year and in previous visits.
