Spotted a vintage rolex datejust two tone on my professors wrist some time ago while studying chem.engineering started a big conversation about the watch which was beaten to death and serviced only once in the thirty plus years of its lifetime , turns out that he had no idea about its value and it was a gift . I was pretty dissapointed that he was not a watch enthousiast ...

Since I’m not flying much nowadays I don’t see as many true in the wild (non-friend) but last week caught a decent one. A Rolex Explorer II on the wrist of someone I deal with in management @ Aldi ... who says discount doesn’t pay?!?
He bought it new and beats it to hell, so showed him my well worn Omega 2254 that I treat the same, my daily tool watch. Good meeting, I like him better than I did before!

Cleared a flight from the UK the other day and two Speedmasters on bracelets, both looked newish modern watches.
Didn’t have time or a chance to comment.

Wife was promoted to partner recently and went to a partners celebration dinner. Wore my speedy because it’s my fanciest watch. Spotted a Rolex GMT Batman, but never got the chance to talk to him.

I have moved in Luxembourg since the past few months and i spot Rolexes and Omegas quite often. Best thing I've spotted up to now was a royal oak offshore chrono
Welcome to Luxembourg!
Yes many status symbols around, but also many people just caribg about having a good watch!

Spotted a guy in his early forties with a speedy at an event today. Turned out it was his grandfather's watch. He went swimming with it in the sea here a year ago with predictable results. He then had a watch maker "fix it". Poor speedy was polished to hell and back, dial out was washed but hands looked original.

Didn't take any photos or tip him off of what he had done to the value of his watch.

And yes, it was an ed white...

Jumping into this zombie thread…

Rarely. Almost never. Oddly, the thread title jumped at me because last week I went for sushi, and the guy sitting next to me at the bar was wearing a 14060. First decent watch I’d seen in the wild in so long I commented on it and we had a great conversation about collecting and grail watches.

What you see in the wild has a lot to do where "The Wild" is. A few weeks ago Mrs.Jones and I attended an outdoor wedding in the posh neighbourhood of Studio City. The score there:

Submariner: 3
Cartier Tank: 2
Breitling Superocean: 1
Omega blue SMP 300 (mine): 1

Oh, almost forgot: the groom was wearing a new-looking Oyster Perpetual -- possibly a gift from the bride?

I’m not surprised at the Studio City showing. LA really strikes me every time I’m there as a hive of style over substance. People wearing Cartier and driving Mercedes but live in Reseda. There’s a real attitude of “look successful to be successful.”
Of course, I’m sure that wasn’t the case at your function today; I’m speaking of the area more broadly. Flex culture definitely varies from place to place.
I don’t mind living where most wouldn’t recognize anything I’m wearing. I’m way less likely to get robbed. 😗

Have you ever thought that the vast majority of watch buyers have no conception of what their watch is worth, they will get the watch serviced when it is needed and the service centre will return a beautiful watch looking like new.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this, it is the owners choice, they simply want their watch which they have had for years back, the fact that getting it serviced, having parts swapped out just doesn’t concern them.

Not everyone knows the significance of the watch they own, for most it’s simply a watch. This is why people get all hot and sweaty when they see an original Ed White or similar being offered for sale, why is this, well most have been for a service and had service parts installed, an original is rare.

Don’t laugh at those that don’t know, just remember it could well have been a relative of yours that bought a 2998 when they were launched but binned it when it went wrong, after all, how were they to know at the time that the watch would one day be worth a lot of money?

No laughing from me, each to their own. I think the vintage market is way over hyped by speculators anyway. The guy was super pleased that I noticed his watch and we hit it off talking about other subjects. The speedy was a great opener to an interesting chat with a fun dude. Which is how it should always be 😀

So true.

I live in a small town on the shore of Lake Superior. I rarely see any pieces here beyond Apple, Fitbits, or cheap fashion watches. However, every time I fly I spot a Tudor, Rolex, or Omega on the plane - usually while I am boarding or as others walk by my aisle seat.

The airport is definitely a good place for watch spotting. Likewise art and antique car auctions.

I'm working in a bookstore and we are (also) selling books on Rolex, Omega and other brands

Today's score: 80ies Speedmaster worn by a customer (who also had a 67 Speedmaster at home) and two compliments for my 69 Speedy... 😀

Spotted over a dozen Rolex’s on my last trip. One 41mm Datejust, a couple vintage two tone Datejusts with wildly stretched jubilee’s, a hand full of date variant Subs, a vintage blue dialed gold Sub (which was actually quite beautiful), a two tone GMT, and several regular modern GMT’s. The only vintage Speedy I saw was on my wrist.

One vintage Jaeger LeCoultre

Lots of Apple watches.

Last 18 months I rarely see the wild 😉

Prior to that, it varied. With one employer it was multiple daily, with another it was realistically 1-2/week. Outside of the workplace I do not pay much attention, but it was fairly common to see nice watches flying business class.

I’ve got to go to Vegas for Black Hat and DEFCON in August. Flying business and staying at the Cosmopolitan. First flight since COVID. I’ll keep my eyes open, especially at the Jaeger LeCoultre boutique. 😁

Saw an employee at the apple store wearing a speedy the other day!
I soooo hope this is a serious post 👍

That would be almost as good as seeing them using an Android phone

Hahaha, absolutely serious! It caught me off guard. I even walked up to him, and we talked about it. I believe he's the resident hardware specialist for macs. Either way, certainly the last place I expected to see one. 😁
