How often do you see ANY nice watch in the wild?

Customer, maybe 65 to 70 years old bought some books in our store,
when paying I saw he had a very nice looking Flightmaster with original steel bracelet on his wrist.
Asked him about the watch, he said he received it on his graduation from highschool (must be beginning of the 70s) and wore it since then

Sorry no picture 🙁
I started to semi-daily my flightmaster again recently, and I would be so happy if somebody recognized it and chatted me up. Too bad about the pics, tho I understand it can be awkward to ask a stranger to photograph their watch, but I would love to see what a regularly worn, original owner, flightmaster looks like!

I met a watch collector two years ago when I was taking Spanish classes. I told him my goal was to own a Speedmaster one day, and he mentioned he owned a vintage one (and that I should go ahead and buy one!).

My own Speedy is on order right now (I *#% hate the wait), so I’ve taken his advice.

Our neighbour, who owns a double glazing manufacturing company, came to talk to my mother about getting a new front door, and I noticed he has the most beautiful Royal Oak panda chronograph. That man has worked very hard to build his business, and I take my hat off to him, and hope he enjoys that beautiful watch. I also (and I speak as a Rolex owner) liked the fact he'd gone for something a little less obvious than the Rolex.

When flying, I look at the wrists of people as I walk past those in first class on my way to coach. I usually see Rolex watches. Once I saw two Omega.

Outside of that, I gotta say it's pretty rare to see anyone wearing a real mechanical or automatic watch. I guess I am hanging out in the wrong places. My guestimate is 95.99% don't wear watches, an the other 4% wear apple watches or digital watches.

Hey, I just wore my Ploprof for 25 days straight. I'm thinking it's pretty rare for anyone here to jave worn a single watch in their collection for that length of time.

I have to second this experience. When flying/ making my way through the airports, I usually see a few Rolex and Omegas to a smaller extent. That’s usually where I see most of them.

Take a stroll around Beverly Hills, Century City Mall, Brentwood and Westwood in the LA area and you will see almost every high end watch imaginable. There are brands that I see more often, Rolex, Cartier, Audemars Piguet, Breitling and Omega. I don’t see as many Patek dress watches, nor VC, and Lange & Sohne, but, I have seen them.

Seeing high end watches in the wild depends on where you are and who you are surrounded by at any given time.

Most Expensive I Recall Seeing
Audemars Piguet RO Concept
Rolex Paul Newman 6241
Patek Philippe Moonphase Chronograph
Panerai PAM21
Richard Mille Chronograph
Audemars Piguet RO Barrichello Rose Gold

The guy ahead of me in line at the cigar lounge Saturday buying a 'glass pipe' was wearing a beautiful early white dial Milgauss this last weekend. I was wearing my Air King and we started chatting about watches while I paid for my Macanudos.

Not a typical occurrence in my little city. Amusing though!

Was standing in line for the Flesh and Blood exhibition at the Kimbell Art Museum in Ft Worth. An older gentleman in front of me had a vintage Rolex on his wrist, but I couldn’t tell what it was from the way he was holding his hands behind his back. Finally asked what he was wearing:

One owner ~40ish years. He said his Timex had broken and he went into a jewelry store to get a new one. The salesman had convinced him to buy the 1655 and he was embarrassed to tell his wife how much it cost when he got home. He thought it was bonkers that I spotted the watch on his wrist and he had no clue as to the value. I’m certainly not an expert on this reference, but I hazarded a guess that he was wearing 5 digits. His response: “well I guess I’ll have to keep it then!” Good on you, sir.

Aside from Beverly Hills Rodeo area, the place I actually spot the craziest watches are high end appliance stores. I'm in real estate brokerage and project manage construction of homes. The craziest in-the-wild was when I stopped an older gentleman (70s, at least) to comment on his watch inside the store as he was finalizing his purchase of a new set of appliances... It was this gold daytona 6263. I asked to take a picture of it, he said "no". haha.

I never see them anywhere in and around West London. My friends wear Armani and Diesel rubbish.

Only when I get on the London Underground to go to work (pre-COVID) would I do some watch spotting.

I spotted this on a friend's wrist recently during the coffee break of a orchestra gig.

Had great chats with him afterwards as I am always keen on talking watches with people who also like them!

As I live in Berlin, if you are walking in Friedrichstraße you can spot some watches from Omega, Rolex, mostly.. I spotted an AP Royal Oak once but in my area people are known for being very left-winged politically.. so there are not that many watch enthusiasts and there is not much around.

The owners of my favorite italian restaurant however have a big clock of Wempe (german jeweler) on their wall and they wear their Rolex and IWCs with pride. 😀

Few months ago saw my highschool friend with his father at lunch. His father is owner of major security company and regulary wears his PP Grand Complication and pairs it with Nissan GTR Nismo. Strange combination but wow!
Next time I'll take pictures for sure.

Spotted a client wearing a vintage date just (70s ish) a few weeks ago. His was beat to hell but said he had a few and always wore one of them. He works in construction and it was obvious he doesn’t take them off often.
