How often do you see ANY nice watch in the wild?

I was out of town for a small meeting last week in Chicago and the presenter had on a Cartier of some sort and another guy at my round table had on a Grand Seiko of some sort.
I thought those two were interesting choices, not something I would expect to see necessarily.

I see Cartier with some regularity - far more than Omega, tbh. Last week I was at McCormick Stillman Railroad Park, which is in Scottsdale. I saw a husband and wife that were wearing the nicest watches I've seen out there - she had a Cartier Ballon Bleu and he was wearing a Coke GMT II.

At a wedding two weeks ago a guy had a steel Daytona 116520 on, but I didn't get a chance to talk to him about it. When I got married in 2010 I was at a Rolex AD and they had just gotten one of those in stock. He offered it to me for $9900 if I recall correctly. Little did I know at the time I could have worn the watch for the past 8 years and then made money on that purchase 😜 Our whole wedding was around $12K and we wanted to buy a house, so buying it wasn't even a remote possibility.

A very interesting thread that gives some thought material.

I am a university professor and, to provide an answer to the thread question, I must say that almost never. Even though my fellow co-workers are people with a reasonable good income, with the exception of my Dean (Rolex Day Date) the rest use cheap watches, a Fitbit or nothing at all.

I also collect fountain pens and somebody in that forum asked the similar question (How many people around you uses a fountain pen?). And again, among my colleagues, only one sports a couple of Parker pens. The rest have an amazing ability and keen eye to find the cheapest ball pen in town (like 10 for $1.25 in Dollarama – and I am talking Canadian dollars not US !!).

Together with that, I see a looseness (or should I say, shabbiness) in dressing. No more ties or suits in academia and other work environments (with a few exceptions) but lots of chinos, jeans and sports shirt.

Are we loosing that touch of elegance and sophistication that the previous generation used to have?

I work at a university, and it seems to depend on the department. I see a lot of people in business and political science in suits and ties, but only rarely in the arts and humanities.

I haven't used fountain pens in years, but I hate the cheap ball points. For just one or two dollars I can get a ball point or gel pen that writes the first time, doesn't skip, tolerates a bit of an angle to the page, and doesn't drive me crazy.

I saw a fellow at Lowe’s yesterday wearing a Rolex Daytona. Yellow Gold with black dial. Black bezel. Perhaps a 116518LN

In the wild... it seems that less than 15% wear watches as far as I can tell.
Most common are smart watches ( Apple, fit bit, garmin)
I have seen a couple submariners and a date just... maybe an omega? Not many that is for sure.

@Spruce nice collection of 51s including sets, bal pens and pencils. I am nowhere closer, just a few 51s, 61s, 75s, 45s. Congratulations, it looks really impressive.

Hardly worth my posting a WRUW style photo of which pens I choose for daily use, given my predilection for red/black gold capped Parkers! 😉

Did someone say Parker fountain pens???

I am not a super devoted fountain pen user, but I do have Pilot Custom Heritage 91 and Sailor ProGear for fountain pens and I also have Parker Jotter for back up

@Taddyangle - probably didnt talk about watches either. Like either party could agree on what to wear now a days anyway.

Did Trump put something around his eyes?
Just he goggles while on a tanning bed. Did anyone else hear his press conference? Back to calling elements of the press "enemies of the people".

Three occasions come to mind. Not a lot.

My orthopedic surgeon had a Seamaster PO

A soccer da wore his Grandfathers Rolex GMT Pepsi

And during an interview one of the interviewers worebthe Same watch I was wearing: Zenith El Primero Cheonomaster. Talk about awkward talking watches during an interview

Did you score the interview??? I mean, both of you wear the same watch, and it is not some generic Rolex/Speedmaster/Seiko.. What is the chance??

When I visit the south of France, wearing Rolex watch seems to be religion. See old people as well as young wearing everything from old Oyster Perpetuals to gold Daytonas. During the summer, Richard Milles are everywhere. probably saw upwards 50 RMs in the whole summer.😲
