How much did you pay for your first Speedmaster?

Agreed, it was- in the sense that is wasn’t pocket change. To put it in perspective, in 2002 I made $28k/year. I was paying student loans, a car payment and shared an apartment. My $800 used Speedmaster (which was market rate for a step-dialed 70’s Speedy) required a little saving and was about half my monthly salary....in an entry level paying job.
I don’t think anyone in the same economic position today could buy that much watch for half a monthly salary anymore.

Yeah I made around $30K at the time.

And it was crap pay then, but nice watches were still within reach- subs were a dime a dozen at around $2.5-3k...in the used case- at an AD!

If only we had known. Kind of like buying 5K Bitcoin for $25 in 2012. I kick myself regularly for not putting even a hundred bucks into BC when I first heard of it.

I paid a couple of hundred or so £'s way back as I was passing a shop. With Simon at the present time and can't wait for it to come back!

All these old stories of Speedmasters for a dime makes me jealous. young collector here, my first Speedmaster was the '57 Trilogy, which I think ran me a bit north of $7k. Still one of my favorite watches.

£3600 in 2015. Maybe the only watch I own that’s appreciated in value (maybe my CK2998 LE bought at retail hasn’t gone down at least).

The watch collectors’ aspirational song.

And when you tell people that a run of the mill used Speedy could be had for under $1k in 2002, the usual response was “well, that was a lot of money back then”.....no, it wasn’t! And back then was 18 years ago, not 50! Shit has gone crazy!

It's all relative depending on who you were chatting watches with.

Imagine the people buying a Patek 5711 or FP Journe CB today vs 5 years ago. That’s true regret.

...unless you can score one at retail!! 🙄

Yes, I know there is a higher chance to be struck by lightning.... but since I am on the FPJ waiting list for a Chrono Bleu, one can be hopeful, no???
