How much did you pay for your first Speedmaster?

Hi all
Well due to my love hate relationship with chronographs it took me quite sometime to get my first and only speedy, the love hate thing was love the look but hated them on my wrist. Anyway as soon as I saw the Apollo 8 it just spoke to me in a way not many other watches ever had and I knew I had to have one. I've had it just over a year now and still love it as much as when I first saw it as the combination of a ceramic case and bezel as well a being a classic 3 sub dials and it's thinness due to the manual movement all just make it perfect to me not forgetting the unique laser ablated dial and rear on this truly one of a kind speedy. What's a post without some pictures so here they are. Oh and nearly forget it cost me £7,400.

Marc

Still I thought this wasn't a bad pickup for (February) 2019 - my first speedy, a 3594.50, for 3000 AUD (about 2000 USD).

More than fair price, and a hell of a piece! You made this guy jealous!

$5000 for this (on bracelet with #6's) back in 2014 when Ed Whites were the unloved straight lugs. Timing is everything!

Around $3200 in 2016. This was a month after I purchased my Seamaster, and the speedy soon became the red headed stepchild. Regretfully sold the speedy 3 months later. I'll get around to buying another one, eventually.

Bought my -76 off of ebay in 2016 for $2075 w/ 1171. And then immediately it needed an $800 service. The replaced hands didn't bother me at the time, but now they do 😒

Just checked what 65 GBPis equivalent to today, not as low as I expected: 3K GBP. Then again the cheapest Kia Picanto in NL is 13k in euro. Who would have thought to have paid that for a small car in the past.

I purchased this 145.022-69 locally for about USD 5.500 in early June this year.
I'd have liked to pay less due to the condition it is in (a few tiny dings on the dial, dirty hands with chipped paint, disintegrated tritium on the hour and minutes hand, chips on the bezel), but there were others that were interested and I decided that it was worth a little bit extra to get a vintage watch that I could check out face to face, as that opportunity would likely not present itself again where I live. It had been a one-family watch, initially bought by a watchmaker and then handed down to his son that has kept it in a drawer for the last 15-20 years.

It is currently at Simon Freese's for a sympathetic service, which is also an expense that needs to be added to the value/cost of the watch.
Edit: Added a few more photos of the case.

My first Speedy was bought from an AD in Evanston, IL in 1994. I'm not sure if I'm remembering correctly, but I think I paid about $1100 for it. Lot's of water under the bridge since then...

And when you tell people that a run of the mill used Speedy could be had for under $1k in 2002, the usual response was “well, that was a lot of money back then”.....no, it wasn’t! And back then was 18 years ago, not 50! Shit has gone crazy!

@Archer - there were a number of parts needed for the movement that added to the base cost - IIRC around $350 in parts. Additionally my main bridge plate had a badly worn hole where the barrel arbor rides. This necessitated drilling out the hole and mounting a new bushing, which was then sized to the correct diameter. If this couldn't have been done the main bridge would have been another $800.

One of my massive regrets is not buying the Speedmaster Pro that I saw used at Torneau in 2006/2007 for $1100. Seriously dumb. I have no idea not what year it was - I'm guessing mid 80s. But I wanted box and papers too and they didn't have those ::facepalm1::

In fairness that would have been A LOT of money for me at the time, but in retrospect it was a very poor decision on my part.

I have some luck with Speedmasters unlike Rolex, all 5 speedmaster I bought at least gave return in value more or less , especially that $1350 Ed White 3 years ago 😜😜

Agreed, it was- in the sense that is wasn’t pocket change. To put it in perspective, in 2002 I made $28k/year. I was paying student loans, a car payment and shared an apartment. My $800 used Speedmaster (which was market rate for a step-dialed 70’s Speedy) required a little saving and was about half my monthly salary....in an entry level paying job.
I don’t think anyone in the same economic position today could buy that much watch for half a monthly salary anymore.
