I also didn’t pay for my first speedy, my father started this customs of buying his sons a speedy for their 18th birthday.
I remember receiving mine and thinking: “Why this color?” But then eventually it grew on me and I thought it was pretty cool to have a white (now referred to as Albino) speedy, I wore it for special occasions and I’m glad it’s still in good conditions.
$AU1500 in 1999. Bought as my first "proper" watch because I loved the design and the history. Dealer told me it was a '69 model which did not mean much at the time, it was just cheaper than a new one. I now know it is a '76.
My first - I spent a long time running up to this. Had been reading as much as possible / Chuck Maddox’s site was still active but the online materials we had back them were very lacking for the novice. One question I remember being too embarrassed to ask was -‘whats a step dial’
In the end I decided - I don’t know anything near enough to try and dip a toe into vintage speeds.
So bought this in NYC OB. At face. If there’s a noob tax too be paid this was one of mine. I still love the enamel dial though!!! $11,5
We all did at one time, and still do from time to time.
I’m not as- senior as many members here (probably smack in the middle) but you know you have owned a watch for a long time when you remember the tritium being much lighter.
