In my personal situation, it has changed my knowledge of Limited Edition Speedmaster watches:

I now really like the 40th Anniversary Gemini IV Speedmaster watch, the TinTin watch, and the 50th Anniversary Apollo 11th watch.

For some of the other watch types on here, I've learned about Classic Seiko Dive Watches, Zenith watches, Vintage Omega Watches.

And, I've learned an "old school" black Benrus watch might be the same watch Steve McQueeen wore in the Bullit movie.

It's prompted me to buy more watches. At one point I was buying a watch every 6-8 weeks. I have pretty much cut it down to 1-2 a year. And now have a one in, one out rule. Largely driven by out of control prices for Speedmasters. My last Speedmaster was purchased 2+ years ago.

My all time favorite Speedmaster

On the opposite end of @Taddyangle. Basically I don’t need more than 10 watches in my collection (hence the recent barrage of sales posts). Absolutely nothing wrong with a vast collection, but for me... Trying to consolidate, and actually keep the ones that bring me the most joy out of wearing them, or if they have special memories associated with them.

If I keep selling at the rate I’m going, I may be one of those unicorn, one-watch-type-of-guys in near future. Who would’ve thought? 😲

I joined to get help vetting a Seamaster, and I soon entertained visions of owning dozens of wrist watches. My collection Has since grown to <8, and will max out at 12 some day. I decided I’d only want watches that I’d wear and invest in a service for.

I also thought I had zero interest in pocket watches, man was I wrong! These Im okay having some just to look at (not serviced) because the are so evocative of style and quality. Just look at the quality of the movement decoration, it’s off the charts

One man’s trash is another’s treasure. What I thought was damage others find appealing and call it patina. It hasn’t changed my mind on the matter, but has enlightened me to how subjective watch collecting can be.

I learned I am a highly susceptible person that should not pay attention to others collections and tastes....for the sake of my bank account and marriage.

This first post In this thread changed everything about watches for me.

https://omegaforums.net/threads/condition-condition-condition-and-other-pieces-of-advice.1716/

That IS really good advice there. I’m copying and pasting it here:

“If there is one thing to remember forever in collecting vintage omegas, it is that condition is first and foremost. Of course the piece has to be original in the first place but if there is one lesson that has been imparted to me and one I wish to pass on it is that.

As I have stated in another thread, it is far better to overpay for an excellent original vintage omega than to underpay for one in below average or average condition. My greatest regrets in this hobby have been not overpaying for excellent examples - if only I could raise my offer some more for these long gone and in many cases never to be seen for sale again examples.

Other rules I TRY to live by:

Better to have 1 excellent piece than 3-4 so-so ones.

Never sell to a dealer - you will never get close to what your watch is worth.

Ebay is the best place to get nice vintage omegas at reasonable prices IF and only IF you have the knowledge and patience to sift through the many many crappy pieces.

If you do not know the seller always pay via paypal using your credit card - that way you will have some recourse if the deal goes wrong - and if you do enough deals something will inevitably not go your way.

You should have 1 or 2 trusted watchmakers preferably someone local. And when you have something repaired be explicit about what you want done and not done - I attach an index card with written instructions for every watch I have serviced - want to make sure everything is crystal clear.”

@MSNWatch , thank you!
