Hello OF community! I’m asking your advice today about a watch that I would want to buy for my father (who also has a bug for vintage omega watches). The problem is that I have a very limited knowledge about this reference and I’m really unsure about the information that I have found about it.

The watch has a reference 2395/3 and seems to have a cal.28 or 360 and dating to 1944 (10.xxx.xxx) wich IMO is correct.

Seller is an old gentlemen and struggled to take the pictures but was really cooperative, this is the best I can get for the moment :

    41C4EBED-5CEC-4BD6-A3A8-58CF40946E4D.jpeg C62EAC79-21DA-471D-AE1D-9197EFCCBCB2.jpeg 221EF185-BB57-49E8-9222-71C336CC7944.jpeg 035B58B8-0034-49EA-A961-BAAC34927C23.jpeg A94CB1F7-E9E3-4BA2-A61C-8339D6A3E439.jpeg 3A93ABFC-1AE2-4F53-ABED-0C45B84ADB5D.jpeg 571F4D2B-2B4C-42FA-AA6C-DA32943957E3.jpeg

    My personnal thoughts are :

    • That the case seems in really good shape but crown isn’t original.
    • Mechanism looks fine but the regulator isn’t centered and is way too far after « retard ». Is that something I should be worried about? (regarding that if I buy the watch I will take it to my watchmaker for service)
    • My biggest preoccupation is the dial, I really struggle to see anything (sorry for that..) but it appears to have lume on the hour markers which doesn’t match the leaf hands that are without lume. I don’t think the hands are wrong for the reference so could that be a sign of a redial?

Asking price is 325 (can probably reduce do 300). Do you think It could be a good deal or should I give it at pass and continue my searching? Thanks in advance for your opinions and your precious help!

Hi. My gut tells me it is a genuine original dial based on the subdial, but another gut is still skeptical about the Omega writing... But again, as you said it yourself, the pictures are not great.

Is there any chance you get to take shots of the watch yourself? With those it is hard to give a veredict.

    Case looks indeed sharp.

You mentioned the price is 325. 325.. what? US$, €, AU$, CAD? Please please don't forget this is an international forum.. It might be obvious for you, but how do the people you are trying to get to help you are supposed to know? ;)

    Best wishes,

    Rudi

You are absolutely right, sorry. Seller is asking 325 euros. Unfortunately I do not leave near the seller’s location.. I can always ask the seller to take some better pictures of the dial but for the moment he didn’t send me any photo that wasn’t blurry. So not sure if it would help

Blurry photos, but my gut feeling is that the dial is ok. However, it should have lumed dauphine hands IMO. The lume in the indentations of the applied dial markers is correct.

At that price I would definitely buy it. More right than not.

Tell him to put his phone on top of a tall mug to stabilize the shot- and to put the watch underneath. It works wonders.

The seller replied that he doesn’t think he could take a better picture.. I tried to recommend him using @Syrte’s technique, let’s see.

Are you sure that you want to keep bothering the poor man? The watch has the wrong hands and is 32mm. If you're ok with those issues, then just buy it and take your own photos. He put a fair price on it.

He just sent me this picture :

    Definitely fine IMO

Yes 32mm is maybe indeed a bit small for my father and the problem is that I cannot see the watch in person and verify how it would wear. Then I would also need to source correct hands.. Also I feel a bit bad for annoying the seller and then not buying the watch. I’m a bit mitigated.

He will need good pictures to sell it to anyone, so maybe you have helped by bugging him, even if you don’t buy it. I wouldn’t feel obliged if it’s not a match for you.

Hello everybody! I just wanted to give you some feedback. First thanks a lot for all your advices! I’ve finally decided to buy the watch because I know small watches generally suit me well and because honestly.. I just couldn’t resist.. :D It came pretty fast and i directly dropped the watch to my watchmaker. Here are some pictures of the watch that I took today (freshly serviced) :

What are your thoughts? I also wanted to ask if anyone know which could be the correct hands for this caliber ? During my researches I haven’t found any watch of this caliber that would have luminous hands. All models have leaf hands like this one.. Thanks in advance!

    Cheers!

Its gorgeous, I’ve leave it as is and enjoy it. If the hands bother you you can start hunting for them, but the darn thing is so nice why mess with it. Nice buy!

regarding @Syrte ’s suggestion of using a mug to photograph the watch, empty the mug first...

i’m lucky i was photographing a diver, but so no real harm done, but it does smell like beer now...

Agree it looks great as is. Hands may have been replaced a long time ago due to radium being dangerous. Style and length fit the watch perfectly.

Since the dial has lume, the hands must be lumed as well. Alpha or Dauphine given the shape of the markers. I just did a 5-minute search using google images and found several examples with lumed alpha hands. Unfortunately I don't know the reference of your specific watch because the photo is too blurry.

Here is the key point. To my knowledge, you will NEVER find an original watch with a lumed dial and un-lumed hands. It is illogical and unusable, and just not done. OK, every rule has an exception, but it would be one in a million. So if you see un-lumed hands paired with a lumed dial, you should just assume that the pairing is not original.

On the other hand, it is possible to see a watch with lumed hands and an un-lumed dial.

In that era, tapered triangular applied hour markers like those on your watch would typically have been paired with tapered hands, such as alpha or dauphine. There are definitely exceptions to this, but it is a general stylistic rule. I don't think it will be easy to definitively know exactly which style would have been used for your watch. However, I do not think it would have had lumed plunger or baton hands.

    Yep, absolutely makes sense.

I wasn’t aware of this, good to know! We learn something everyday

Do you think I should give up and leave the watch as is? What would you do in my place?

Thanks a lot for taking the time to answer to my questions! :)

I would wear it and enjoy the heck out of it. And I would keep my eyes open for some compatible lumed alpha or dauphine hands of the right length. If either one showed up, I would grab them and have them relumed with color-matched compound. Hands and re-luming are relatively cheap. It's just a matter of the time and energy to hunt for them.
