How do you ship and insure watches?

Indeed. Parcelpro also requires that for the goods to be insured, no matter how small they might be (stones, ring, watch etc), be shipped in a medium or larger box. This is required in order further conceal the true nature of the contents. A small box will only have $100 of insurance.

Bigger boxes also go missing less frequently.

I shipped my Rolex from New Jersey to Dallas Texas for service last week via USPS, registered mail. I purchased $8,000 worth of insurance and it cost me $20 for that insurance, plus another $10 to ship via registered mail.

A couple layers of tissue around the watch, then bubblewrap around the tissue-wrapped watch. I bubblewarpped the living crap out of it too! Special paper wrapping tape around all openings on the box. Tape available at Staples, and you have to dampen the tape with a wet sponge when you apply it. No plastic tape of any kind is acceptable for registered mail and the USPS. Anyway, as far as Rolex is concerned this is the only way to ship a watch to them for service. This is per the detailed instructions they email you once you've arranged a service appointment at an RSC.

Sounds complicated. Why not get it serviced by Rolex in New York City?

Too many horror stories lately about the RSC in NYC. I could drop my watch off in NYC but I felt much better using Dallas.

Has anyone lost a watch during transit and if it was insured, did the insurance pay out?

Parcelpro . Call them explain what you want (watch collector and some times seller) and they will tell you what form to fill out and what descriptions to apply. You need to submit 3 peoples contact details (address and phone numbers) that you deal with as a reference.I'm sure 3 OF members would be more than happy to oblige .Presto one week later account ready.
So I just filled out a account request on Parcelpro. I just x'd out the references section. Got a call from them about an hour later and told them I was a collector and would ship occasionally. They said no problem at all. And they actually insure collectibles of all kinds (in addition to stated jewelry and watches), just contact your agent ahead of time for approval and quote. No cost to join. If fact they said you only need to be a bonafide business for international shipments(ie need tax ID #). Collectors can ship domestically as an individual. About an hour after the phone call, got the confirmation messages on the account, so two hours start to finish. Piece of cake.

You can ship internationally as an individual as well, if you just hop on another quick call with them. Your SSN is your tax ID; I think the government doesn't take as much notice if you're only shipping out a few packages a year.

Forgot to mention, they said for certain delivery zip codes they will divert to UPS Central dist, and then deliver by armed guard at no extra expense. Must be worth it to reduce losses.

Having read the comments above re FedEx as option with parcel pro. Fellow I talked to made it very clear I was to use UPS express boxes, and deliver to UPS center in person, have them to scan into system and get receipt. So perhaps FedEx in areas where UPS cannot support? Or is it an option at any location?

Any location. When I had my orientation they said the only carrier they really trusted was Fed Ex.

I have the option to create shipments with UPS or FedEx, in any box I like (as long as it adheres to their security guidelines, which are available on the website or they'll be happy to email you). Schedule a pick-up, or drop it off at a UPS Store / FedEx Office etc.

Also, they'll insure shipments from DHL or certain other carriers if you contact them about it and give them the tracking info. Really flexible operation in my experience, and while I haven't had any problems I've had to rectify through them, I mean I haven't had any problems.

Was this before UPS bought ParcelPro? When I was informed about that sale, we were told that they would prefer us to use UPS, but that FedEx would stay as an option for now. I personally never use UPS with my account - always FedEx.

Uh...I have had an account and have been using them for years mate. I'm just trying to understand when the statements were made to Larry S about them only trusting FedEx.

Nope they were already part of UPS. My rep told me that they felt that UPS was too loose with procedures to trust with watches or jewelry.

This may be why they have never followed through on the elimination of the FedEx option.
