·There have been some very neat technological developments, but in general the future is going to look more like a 70's-80's low budget - filmed in Australia- sci fi straight to video schlock fest.

·To the original question I would say you are under-estimating both the timescale and the scope of the final change/deployment. For those working in the field of R&D like myself, 10 years isn’t a particularly long time. From first ideas or discoveries through initial media hype to exploitation and ubiquity is more like 20 years plus.
Self driving cars have been mentioned in this thread but not the long history of R&D development behind it. Many cars today have “intelligent” lane following, adaptive cruise control …. systems that were spun off from the original overall scope of problems to solve for fully autonomous vehicles. The history of all this R&D seems to boil down to whoever can be bothered to document their preferred bit of it on Wikipedia. A case in point: very people will remember or even have heard of the Prometheus project

The things that people are working on right now will be part of every day life in 20 to 30 years time and you can hardly imagine what’s coming!

To me, a personal-jetpack from UK Gravity Industries was the nicest surprise of the recent weeks.
The real life tests were on the sea and on the land.
The Royal Marines were testing out a jet pack to see how useful they are in the onboarding operations.So helicopter and ropes are no longer a must. Secondly, jetpack can be used by paramedics and will significantly shorten the time needed in rescue actions.
Probably they can also fly to the continent, pick-up a new watch and fly back without any importation tax, though this concept is yet to be proven..in publics.
but you can see the Navy assault team flying up to your/bad guys' boat & can shoot them down. they have to make them invisible if such an assault team is supposed to be successful.....

·When I look at how omnipresent smartphones are today with all their tracking functionality, natural language speech recognition and processing capabilities and how little thought younger generations give to how easily they are being influenced, sure 20 to 30 years ago that would sound like an Orwellian nightmare and yet today it is normality.
My original comment was merely an attempt to highlight how poorly most people outside any given specialist field are able to estimate the impact long term and the timeline to everyday acceptance by the masses.
And I agree, I am using my iPhone right now to type this- I would be a hypocrite if I didn’t say I enjoyed the conveniences I have thanks to the R&D folks of whom you speak. But I always try to go in to any new tech with both eyes open.
