How Big Is 39mm Explorer?

Yes, and I love mine, I can dress it up or down and it’s just a good simple robust watch. For a long time I considered a 36mm one (tritium dial) and also a 1016. In the end, I concluded that they were too small for me, so got a 39mm and love it, especially on a variety of straps.

I don’t think it’s foolishly big, at least when I compare it to others I own (including Speedmasters, Subs and SeaDweller), so the size isn’t an issue for me (7.5 inch wrist).

Here it is, earlier in the week , on a taupe NOSTime strap:

Some says Rolex are meant to be worn on bracelet, but it looks stunning on your strap!

I really love mine. I have big wrists, and I think it wears relatively small. It’s an outlier in my collection in that it does not have a date, and it’s the smallest watch I own.

I am curious to see if they expand the line to a 41mm and 36mm similar to the Oyster Pro. I would be quite interested in seeing how the dial and dimensions scale even further up.

Gratuitous, lume shot taken with iPhone:

It's slightly bigger but not crazy big. Here is a shot for my 39mm Explorer next to the skyfall AT for comparison.

Both are great watches. You have very good taste indeed.

Can’t really tell the size difference. 39mm Explorer probably has slightly longer lug to lug I’m guessing.

I had the same concern when I bought the explorer 39 this year. I have a small wrist, but when I tried it, it was perfect. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Everyone will have their preference in this respect. I have never tried the 36 though, so I can’t compare. But very happy with the 39.

I tried on the 39 in an AD one time, felt too big for me. Remember it's a time only watch, so the actual dial will be bigger than say a submariner with a bezel. My smaller wrist and the 36 were made for each other.

The 38.5 Aqua Terra is all dial no bezel too. Interestingly nobody argues about its size for looking big on the wrist.

Aqua Terra just comes off as more proportionally elegant. Its effortless where as the Explorer with those dimensions is just trying way too hard. Dial looks absurdly big without a bezel to offset the size.

There are those who would only wear an Explorer on steel. I think that some combination of the simplicity of the dial, the quality of the steel and the blackness of the dial, lends it to being worn on different colour straps... here are examples:

By far the most versatile watch I have ever owned...and to think I was contemplating the 39mm!

I recently purchased a 36mm Explorer and really love the size on my 6.75” wrist. The proportions just work so well on this watch. It’s been a nice change compared to my PO 8500. Hard to believe Rolex would stop making this size Explorer.

I’m in the same boat contemplating the 39mm. I wouldn’t be contemplating if they filled the numerals with lume.

I’ve heard people say 39mm Explorer is foolishly big. Is it true though? My Aqua Terra is 38.5mm seems big next to the 36mm Explorer. Any 39mm Explorer owners?
I was very indecisive which version of Explorer i like more:
https://omegaforums.net/threads/hunt-for-explorer.116438/

A few times i had a chance to try and purchase each variant, but on my ~7inch wrist the 39mm dial felt out of proportion, and 36mm felt a little too small..
I had a 38,5mm Skyfall as well and it was a perfect size, but you can not compare it to the 39mm Explorer only because they share alsmost the same case size. It has a different dial layout and bezel, so wears smaller than 39mm Explorer.

In the end i found a local deal for a 36mm Explorer and decided to pull the trigger, and give it some time and see good it wears.

It’s about 3 mm to big 😀

I have a 36 mm and I recently went through the process of buying a Rolex for my dad. Explorer was on the top of the list but 36 mm looks a bit small on his wrist. I finally decided to buy a OP39 white dial with stick markers.

As much as I like the Explorer, I feel the OP is a very close but much better option if the size has to be 39mm.

Explorer 36 mm and OP39 are perfect watches IMHO, the Explorer 39 mm is less than perfect. Go for perfect.

I echo what others have said. The 39mm feels large. My farvet-in-law have quite big wrists and it looks good on him. My wrists are 7.25 inches and it looked too big. I think it wears as large as my Speedy on my wrist

I have a 7.5", maybe 7.75" wrist and I think I can just about pull the 39mm Explorer off. I do frequently find myself checking to see if it's too large which perhaps isn't a good sign though.

It doesn't help that I'm used to vintage watches and for time only, 36-39mm is the sweet spot for me.

It feels as if the case is fine and well sized to me, however the dial is perhaps 1mm too large which makes the watch wear larger overall
