I’ve heard people say 39mm Explorer is foolishly big. Is it true though? My Aqua Terra is 38.5mm seems big next to the 36mm Explorer. Any 39mm Explorer owners?

Yes, and I love mine, I can dress it up or down and it’s just a good simple robust watch. For a long time I considered a 36mm one (tritium dial) and also a 1016. In the end, I concluded that they were too small for me, so got a 39mm and love it, especially on a variety of straps.

I don’t think it’s foolishly big, at least when I compare it to others I own (including Speedmasters, Subs and SeaDweller), so the size isn’t an issue for me (7.5 inch wrist).

Here it is, earlier in the week , on a taupe NOSTime strap:

Former owner here. I actually sold my 36mm Explorer and bought a 39mm Explorer because I thought I would prefer the larger size. Nope. Now both are gone and I wish I had kept the original.

On the bright side, I traded it for a watch that I like.

I’ve tried on both- the 36 felt perfect, the 39 felt mammoth. That said, I own 2 34mm oysters so I’m biased to the smaller- and my Speedy feels like a dinner plate on my wrist so I’m over the big.

Feels fine to me. I have an OP 39 and the explorer and they both seem to be just fine. I wear up to a big pilot ice that’s over 46 so.... maybe not the best judge of size.

39mm with no ‘bezel’ to offset it makes it look large. Honestly they feel larger then a 42mm chrono because the dial size is so large.

    Ditto.

On the other hand (no pun), the person wearing a 39mm E1 on a small (but very cute) wrist as the one below, will prob agree with the foolishly big description...:)

Never mind the wrist - look at those fingers! They look like they’ve been stretched in a mangle, or something from the latest Roald Dahl “The Witches” film...They would be great for modelling rings though...

They aren’t yours are they? Mine in comparison...

Unless that photo has been altered, the elongated fingers is caused by a gene mutation called Marfan Syndrome.

edit : back on topic, the 39 Explorer is too big for me. I wanted one in the worst way until I tried one on at an AD last year. As others have noted, it’s all dial.

They should've just updated the 36mm one with the modern movement and modern lume. Maybe dropped a 36 and a 39 together. Why do they do thisssssssss I hate their marketing department and I hate their intentional supply shortage so much!!!!

Love the way the Black Bay 58 wears; hate the way the modern Explorer I wears. Both 39mm. It's not "foolishly" big, but definitely large and luxurious.

7 inch wrist here, and I prefer smaller watches anyway, so take this with a grain of salt:

I don’t think the 39 wears badly at all on the wrist. Pretty svelte, great bracelet (if a bit heavy), but to me it looks too large on the wrist. This is basically an OP with a mercedes hand. On a sub, you have the bezel to offset some of the visual size. You don’t on the Exp, so the expanse of dial makes it look very large.

The 38.5 Aqua Terra is all dial no bezel too. Interestingly nobody argues about its size for looking big on the wrist.
