Places like Chrono24 deal with escrow and I fully support that system. I can't imagine paying 29k only to wait 5 months for a refund on a fake. The mental stress over the situation would be too much for some.
Not sure what chrono will do if you receive a fake.

That's a great question. I don't know. They vet their 'verified dealers' but if a situation arose I expect their reputation would be on the hook and they would be forced to settle.

...especially at the speed that social media can amplify such injustices...goodwill can go down the drain pretty rapidly; witness the quickly unfolding HH travesty!

Crazy how big this scam has gotten.. It's on almost every big watch forum. Started reading it over at the TRF.

As some members on Rolex forums pointed out, it's not just Chris. It's purportedly several individuals that work together. There needs to be a thorough investigation done.

Hopefully some legal action happens and this guy actually gets into trouble and not just a hit to his business and rep.

Stuff like this needs to be everywhere though. The only way these scammers were able to last as long as they did (and it certainly seems like Chris operated in a network), was how they pressured/shamed their victims into silence, while running under the assumption that Chris' reputation was sterling enough to insulate him from widespread damage.

Oh, and I think it might have been posted earlier in the thread, but bumping this back up. Aged like a fine cheese, this one.

Wow just spent most of the evening and this morning reading through the TRF forum and my wife thinks I’m absolutely nutters. Unbelievable story and I hope it gets resolved in a way that those who got scammed get re-compensated and that this bloke Chris gets the justice that he deserves.

The bushfire sympathy card really got to me... just disgusting

There was always something about Chris that I thought was off, but could not put it. Perhaps his extreme stoic character in videos, no smile nor laugh..not too much in his expression to the best that I recall. This article in which he gives fives tips on buying watches adds to madness of all of this. http://www.executivestyle.com.au/five-things-you-need-to-know-before-buying-a-vintage-watch-h1e9d4
This kind of 20/20 hindsight is pretty speculative and useless. I'd hate to be called out today because I don't smile enough on videos.

I think most of that is a secondary concern to his forthcoming problems with the ATO. He's been charging 10% GST (Goods and Services Tax) on his transactions despite not being registered for GST. You have to register for GST when you're bringing in more than $75k per annum in revenue so he's not passed on any of those GST receipts and I highly doubt he's declared much of the income he's brought in from this enterprise. He's already due in court in February apparently and I don't think he's going to have much fun for the next couple of years.

I've been an active member on the relevant forums (AWF and AWBSS) for a few years now over here in Aus. I've seen the info about Chris not being registered for GST, and agree he might have some Tax office issues coming up...

Having said that, my impression is that a lot of members on these forums, both buyers and sellers, seem pretty interested in tax 'savings' involving moving watches in and out of the country. If you have enough buyers looking to save a quick 10%, it wouldn't surprise me if you ended up with sellers developing a model that would accommodate them while also profiting off it.

This is bloody horrible though, particularly given the problems we've had in recent weeks.

It’s weird, I’ve been banned from AWBSS on FB for a couple of years, despite never having been a member. Reading about the militant moderation and wielding of the ban stick, it’s probably a good thing....

Hi Everyone....

This is kind of like a "Perfect Storm" type of scenario. ...

from what I have read on the net at this time.... ( please take with a grain of salt as I dont know any of the people involved. ).

seller is also a moderator or an admin etc... of a forum... and I love the line from @MickyD "Reading about the militant moderation and wielding of the ban stick..." lots of things can be possible.....

I am very happy to be here at the OF....

Now this guy did wrong.... and it been brought to light... its good that is out there ... and I really dont like the "pile on" by the masses and the name calling, shaming etc.. It is out there , people are getting the message. At lest one guy pulled his youTube channel ... etc....
Yes, the guy did do something wrong ( possibly multiple times ) ... and he might not even be alone in this .so pressure should still be applied.... maybe via news outlets ( local news paper etc... , or maybe even host a web site with the sorted stories from the people that was scammed.... no third parties just piling on .... keep it calm and level headed....

I think it kind of harsh to go after his day job and possible affect his family. etc.... who are more then likely also victims of his/her actions...

Just thinking aloud....

Bill, I understand the thinking aloud. But he obviously wasn't given a dang about how scamming people out of tens of thousands of dollars was potentially going to hurt their day jobs and/ or families... In my book, if you cheat and steal from people you deserve everything that comes your way. This operation may have seriously damaged some buyers and their families.

HI
agreed. That does not make us any better then him in a sense.. It one thing if it just him/her. but if there is a family well its collateral damage that we dont need to create.... I am not saying not to keep pressure on him but I would need to think long and hard before going " global".

As Fred Rodgers would say ... " be kind, Be kind and be kind"....

You seem like a real stand up guy, Bill. It’s people like you that make OF the place it is.
