My initial gut reaction to your idea about another dog is that it might make it worse if Franklin is insecure with his position in your pack, which it sounds like he might be.
Does Franklin have a quiet place of his own? Anywhere he can go to be by himself and rest?
There's probably a trigger, either environmental or medical, which will make sense once you discover it. But figuring it out is the hard part, obviously.
Age changes? Brain chemistry? Get him checked out for health of course but they have things that apparently help with mood and anxiety. We gave my dog something for that seperation anxiety as she started tearing up couch pillows when we were gone. She became a real mess when younger she wasn’t like that.
The vet wanted to put my beloved cat hairy on Prozac Ashe said she was one of the more high strung beings he had ever seen but I knew it was because she was a human trapped in a cats body so I said no she’s been high strung her whole life it’s who she is. But whatever we put my Shepard on helped her sorry I can’t recall the Med but maybe worth a try after ruling out medical issues.
