Things like this always seem to happen either deep in the wilderness or on a holiday evening. Opus was with my wife at our place in the mountains, and she wasn't comfortable pulling them out by herself, so she called our local small-town vet, Dr. Laura, who came in to take care of it. At least there were only about a dozen quills. This happened to two of our Boxers (Piper and Zelda) on backpacking trips, and both times there were 40-50 quills all over their faces, chests, and legs. On both of those occasions, the Rhodesian Ridgebacks (Sheba and Lola) were smart enough to keep away from the porcupine, but apparently Opus isn't that smart.

Its like skunks. One miserable bath if lucky. If unlucky, bath, stitches and shots. All is quickly forgotten when the next standoff occurs. WTF?

Good pain tolerance

My sister has suffered the loss of a second fur kid within a week. RIP Tuxedo. A most elegant gentleman felled by a sudden and aggressive cancer at 17.5 years. He was a character and once he decided he liked you, buddies for life. Ugh. She was a mess yesterday when the emergency vet made the diagnosis. She gave him an evening of hospice and realized they had to make the call. She was better today.

Wow looks very much like my old buddy sooper dooper. It’s really tough losing two close together I think hairy and sooper were within a month, I can’t imagine two in a week your sister must be heart broken.

Obviously no like for such a sad post, little consolation for your sister but she has our sympathy for her sad loss as I am sure she will have from all of us. 🙁

Sorry to read that but glad she was able to have a bit of time to take it in and was able to make the call. He looks to have been a bright and thoughtful chap from the lovely photos.

A bit of good news. April and May have been a bit crappy (in more than one sense) but it looks like old boy has turned a corner this week and is fighting back to his old self. We had become a bit of a cat care home / sleepless nights the last few weeks but he is now much more active and even visited some neighbours for the first time in a long while. Looks like the meds and new diet, plus his fighting spirit and a bit of luck have all kicked in. Better weather also helped, he hates the winter. Longer term we have been told to expect a decline as things can’t be ‘cured’ but that happens to all of us one day with age. He is a soulful, thoughtful cat, so hopefully we have more quality time to come (paws crossed). Pics from this week (He and the Molverine also seem to be on a keel / maybe as she did not batter him or take too much advantage when he was feeling rough …so maybe she is growing on him…)

I’m a little concerned about George fluffington, Rocky raccoon, MaoTze Meow, intercontinental ballistic fluff ball and all the other names I gave him. Last night he was letting out this very long meow holding up his paw, looking at me and limping around. Now Genghis cat isn’t the smartest animal and kept walking on the cement stairs I put in before they completely dried but he would just sneak out when the stairs were almost solid. He also walked through some paint and left kitty tracks all over my house.

Both times I cleaned him up the best I could. He is now sleeping which is unusual cause I’m home he should be bothering me for treats. He is paradactyl and I trimmed his nails this week I fear I might have cut back one of his extra nails too far and maybe it’s getting infected. He was at the vet last week and checked out normal I will certainly bring him back if his pain act continues. It seems to be the “thumb” which contains two extra nails is the culprit as I just tried touching it and he gave me a “wtf hooman” look. I guess I’ll just monitor, it was really the crying that was most concerning as he wailed for a while. Hopefully Kim Jong Fluff is ok and I’m over reacting but we know our animals usual behaviors and this ain’t it.

I’m lucky (I think) I’m still on a pet adoption list and get updates when a cat or dog needs a home. I got a call and they almost guilted me into taking this little fellow. I’m on the list as I’m still waiting for a white fluff ball kitten to show up.
I’m not trying to replace hairy I just still like the long haired pure white cats. Anyway this one was supposed to be adopted but the person no showed. I knew mrs walrus wouldn’t be pleased but he looks too cute and they didn’t have room for him so even if I took him for a week the promised to put me at the top of the list for a white fluff ball. (Damn cat people getting like Rolex)

Anyway on the way down a got a call and there was a little girl crying cause she wanted the kitty. Of course I said let her have it but for a moment I was bummed out as this had been planned since Tuesday and it would have been fun fostering kitty for a week or whatever. Just as well, the house is at peace and a little girl has a new kitten. Remember when we were kids how happy a puppy or kitten made you. Especially since your parents did a lot of the cleaning.

That's risky business. That's how we ended up with our cat 12 some years ago. We agreed to watch him until he was big enough to survive in a shelter. They even had a name for it (it's not "sucker). They called it a " failed foster."

Maeve was a little ticked off the other day...

Good thing that #5 tweezers are not only good for balance springs...

The ticks have been really bad this year, thanks to milder winters...
