Hello all,

I took me a little more than a week to find the will to write this post. After a bout with a pancreas ailment, we had to put down our very beloved Boules Noires. He had stopped eating, had lost a tremendous amount of weight and was clearly suffering. There was a ray of hope when we gave him a treatment similar to what @Walrus is giving to his cat. He came back to almost normal for about 10 days. Why then tried a last ditch effort with the vet. The prognosis was not good.

He was a 14 year old Snowshoe and we were told that pure bread cats have a shorter life expectancy than domestic cats, more so that he was also and outdoors cat. He was a very beautiful, cool customer that loved us unconditionally. Although we were deeply attached to him, we knew that a day like that would come. A day for which we are never ready to face.

The pain has somewhat subsided and life goes on. The good memories are vivid and will remain so. His buddy Porthos didn’t react much to the void Boules left in the household. Porthos is the kind of cat that sleeps 20 hours per day, comes out to eat, get a pet and a belly rub, then goes back to sleep. His routine hasn’t changed. A typical cat!

My good friend in Connecticut, a long time dog owner, suggested we didn’t wait to find another pet. We followed his advice and we admit, it really helped shed the sadness and highlight the happy times, past and future. So we’ve added Linguini to the family. Drove to Kingston, Ontario to get him. Yes, another Snowshoe! Only 2 months old and he and grumpy old Porthos, at 13 are getting along! Joy has taken the place of sadness.

Linguini!

Cheers to all

Sorry to hear that. I’ve read and heard the same thing about purebreds having shorter lifespans due to inbreeding and other factors but tbh I’ve had domestics that developed serious problems around 14-15. Too bad the mirtazapine didn’t help out more. My condolences but your new little fella is cute as hec.

@Faz so sorry for your loss. Our "replacement" cats have been here almost a year and every crazy thing that they do reminds us fondly of the cats that we have loved in our home previously. Still hard though.

I'm sad to hear about Boules Noires, @Faz. He sounds like a great friend, and what a handsome boy.

My neighbor down the street called me over last week. His pure bred German Shepard had a litter. Five pups. He offered me one at his cost which I think just means the cost of papers and vet care (tbh I don’t know what that is) I saw them very cute just opening their eyes and mama dog was so proud as I looked at her pups it was quite funny to see.
I didn’t have my phone but trust me if you saw them you would instantly want one. I helped him out after we got a tornado through our area so i guess he is being nice. Of course the word “yes” was the first thing to come to mind but I gotta think about the two cats I have and their medical issues (one end of life) if I were bring a puppy home it would probably hasten their decompensation so I actually had to turn down a German Shepard which is probably my favorite breed. Tough as hec to do and he just hit us up via email to confirm I don’t want one I don’t have the heart to reply right now. I’ll tell him tomorrow.
I kinda wish he didn’t tell me as for two weeks now it’s really weighing on me how I would love another Shepard. That was my first kind of dog and talk about faithful and affectionate and intelligent (imo) I just love them. I gotta avoid his place as it’s literally three houses down it would be so easy for me to just walk back with a new pup but it would really turn my place upside down.
He certainly did not mean to create this disruption to my chi but he certainly did.

If the universe makes the effort to talk to you, maybe you should listen.

A puppy is a lot of work, of course. But cats will still rule the house. What's your vet say?

A puppy will not hasten a cats anything…. Cats will work the pecking order over real smartly especially a puppy’s 😗

Well it’s just the stress added to the cats I’m concerned about. Stress does a number on cats. Sooper duper got at best another couple months to live and we are still trying to pinpoint the cause of hairys seizures during all the tests it was discovered she has early stage kidney disease or however the vets call it. I just don’t think it’s prudent to add a dog into the mix. The vet is monitoring “quality of life” now I would enjoy a puppy going on those random spazzies but I don’t think my two ailing cats would. And sooper (if she makes it to summer) will be 25 years old all she will be thinking is “haven’t I dealt with enough bullshit already”. If I had two young healthy cats I would most definitely jump on it.

Any chance he would keep the puppy and you could adopt it at the right time. Nice to own it from the start but they will adapt and you would have visiting rights until then?

My little minions. Both are rescues but we got them at different times. Gidget the bigger one is almost 7 years old and Carmelo is about 1.5 years old. Gidget is a Jack Russell/Whippet mix and Carmelo is a Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix. Three crazy breeds that shouldn’t be combined, good part is they tire each other out

😀 Heart warming pictures. This is what makes this the best thread on OF.

Ps. Is the avatar your drawing? Pretty cool. I assume there's a watch under the sleve.😁

When I was young we had a Whippet/Terrier mix. Speed of a Whippet with the badass attitude of a Terrier. No other dog gave him any sass, but a great family dog 👍

Oona the cat is preparing a poster board, but my daughter is interfering and won’t give her her pencil.

So when the weather is better there seems to be a bit more (albeit long distance and on timeshare) harmony in the garden. When it is raining Young Girl has it to herself and does a good drowned rat impression....
