Oh this was classic I was knocking out a few home visits for the holidays one girl was laid up on her couch not feeling well asked if I could give her cat water. I said “sure” looked around for a bowl. She informed me the cat will only drink running water out of the sink but you gotta get the flow just right. Took me five minutes but mission completed
Nice. Cats drink from the faucet and well dogs drink out of the toilet.
Cats are obviously smarter and more sophisticated than dogs.
Old boy always (and only) drank from a big bowl in the garden, which is mostly rainwater. The last couple of months we have finally got him to drink filtered water in the house (helped as he cant stand drinking and eating if young girl is around). The strange thing is, when he drinks from bowl in the house he first alternates by scraping the floor with his left paw and then scraping the bowl with his right paw. He make the bowl ring like a bell and sometimes spills some water. It is a bit comical but also a bit of a mystery why he does that before he drinks?
.
My good old Baxter who passed at the beginning of the year did the same thing. I used to wonder what that’s about but I noticed when he didn’t do it he would get a nose full of water and cough. I started to think perhaps it’s easier them to see the water level when the water is in motion. I read an article about cats vision and their site becomes more clear when they see movement. Mind you I’m putting this all together myself and could be completely wrong

Absolutely! One of mine, the white Aramis, almost always put his paw in the water to check the water level before he drinks. The second one, the ginger, does it sometimes as well, but not every time.
Walrus is right. To check the level of
the water.
Well here is a weird observation. In my experience which is only have cats 90% of my life it seems males do this more frequently than females. It could just be the small sample of my own cats but the females will tend to use their nose to find the level.
