China and Asia are our direct Neighbours. We trade with them all the time. Australia will have a free trade agreement with the EU soon. Australia has all Minerals ( solid, liquid , gas ...)

Yep. A lot of our trade income and wealth in general comes from China, which is historically a stable and reliable partner. Trade will be increasing now since China banned US imports and will be buying our Beef and other products instead.

and China doesn't appear to be upset that they import roughly twice as much from Australia as they export - $8b compared to $3.7b. Australian exports to China haven't been slapped with a 100% tariff in retribution.

I work at a large global logistics company, and our volumes from China to US dropped like 70% this month.
How's that compare to the worst parts of Covid? I'm starting to wonder what I should stock up on now before this gets really ridiculous. I think top on my list of Chinese-made things is we need a new air frier...

If you need it now, definitely buy it. But I'm in the camp that Trump will find a way to claim a win soon and either end, or dramatically scale back the tariffs. It's not going his way politically or economically in the short-term, and the claimed long-term benefits are pretty speculative. If the tariffs do truly drive the US into a formal recession (or a massive price hike), that's the end of the house and senate majority in 2026.

Covid was a huge boom for us. We made more money in 2021-2023 than the 10 years prior.

Yeah, I'm hoping that this is the scenario that plays out. The damage to credibility and international relations will remain. But cheap air friers will be freely available.

Covid was a huge boom for us. We made more money in 2021-2023 than the 10 years prior.
I remember trading some international shipping stocks during that time and they did really ridiculously well. But, I meant more about the potential impact on prices for the consumers at the end of the supply chain.

We eat Basmati or Jasmine with almost every meal here, already stocked up. But, I got to admit I'm not that concerned. Price is 50% of the cost it was at the peak of covid atm.

Availability might be an issue though

I agree this Trump will find a way to ‘win’ this sooner rather than later. Even if he truly believes in the supposed benefits, it’s no good winning the long game if you get destroyed in the short term

Nothing to do with tariff's. The market just decide to take a huge downward swing the same day the tariffs were announced.

Hilariously, he was taking credit for the economy in January of 2024! But now it's all Biden's fault.

It's the Trump coin flip, where his rules are "Heads I win, tails you lose!" It is the greatest coin flip in the history of coin flips! 🤣🤣🤣
