With imports we spend the most on pharmaceutical from Ireland. Tax breaks lead to a lot of production being moved or setup there. That said pharmaceutical companies had already been planning or considering moving production to the US. They don't like the pro-worker laws in Ireland.
Trump is saying tariffs on pharmaceutical are coming. The good news is because of contracts in place prices can't be raised right away. The bad news it's predicted some makes of generics who operate on smaller margins will pull out. Leading to shortages and higher prices anyways. Also those same companies that were already considering producing in the US are now claiming they need a tax break to do so.

I agree drug safety should be a concern of the government. Quickly slapping a tariff on isn't gonna do that in the shot or long term. A long term plan could include tariffs but requires a lot of careful planning. In the short term inspections of overseas producers could be increased. Make the pharmaceutical companies who import pay into fund to cover those government inspections. There a program like this for cruise ship inspections. It saved lives and wasn't funded by tax dollars yet it was severely cut recently in the name of government efficiency.
The majority of precursors are still from China and India.

Drug safety? Hard to do when he gutted the FDA.

Australian camera company halts US factory plans due to concerns over tariffs.

https://tech.yahoo.com/articles/blackmagic-design-halts-us-factory-195100327.html

"The company had hoped US-based production would strengthen ties with American semiconductor firms and streamline its supply chain"

"While parts like semiconductors and the PCBs used in Blackmagic's cameras are sourced from US companies, many are still manufactured overseas and are subject to tariffs. "If we proceed with the US factory, we'd incur tariffs on those parts, increasing costs and negating the savings we anticipated," Hussey said."

They also just raised prices on new camera pre-orders about 30%. Blackmagic Design has been very popular in my field. They lowered the barrier to entry for high quality visuals, and make some industry standard color grading software. But, they are at less than $1 billion in annual revenue and can't afford to wait and see how tariffs play out, so I think this is a sign of things to come.

The two posts above just show how short-sighted the current US government is about trade policy. The ideas sound good, and certainly people here want to see more US made products in the stores. However like most of their policies, this administration's implementation process has been piss poor.

What irks me more are the lies being promulgated to cover it all up.

I’m just kinda giving things a chance see how it plays out. I’m so far on the outside of international trade and discussions between any country to have any real idea what is going on behind the scenes. Just read a Wall Street journal article 70 countries may have been brought together to box in China and it trade practices but what the he’ll do I know. I visited a psych ward I think it was Wednesday to evaluate someone for admission to my place of work. I noticed all their clients were in the day room watching CNN so I just walked in to say hello, turns out the entire ward were now trade experts as they are only allowed to watch news until 6pm. Like here, they shared a very pessimistic outlook on it and said it was the end of the US as we know it.

Anyway my wife got home late last night with a lot of Indian food which was quite tasty. Her department had a meet and greet with the new director of her division. My wife works for one of the Fortune 500 companies they hired a new director who happens to be Indian thus the tasty Indian food. Some of the employees asked her what the company was doing about tariffs. The new director stated it’s been keeping her up nights (not good, you need that sleep to feel ok) but they are making changes. One being bringing to the US production they had out sourced, not all but the ones where it can happen quickly and have it make sense. Another thing she mentioned was the company will no longer be shipping to Canada to to ship to the US. That part I found interesting as I wanted to know which countries are they manufactured in and in what scale this is done. Unfortunately my wife must have become too focused on the tasty Indian food as she did not provide me with further information. I mean that’s kinda a big piece she left. I often tune out at work but when something big comes to the surface my ADHD or whatever I got that makes me dumb gets pushed aside and I get involved. My wife is also a poor story teller in general.

Apparently China has been using Kazakhstan as a way to avoid tariffs. Along with Vietnam and others. According to the articles I read so many loopholes popped up internationally or not it’s unknown who is doing what where at this point.

So I did find my wife’s very lacking replay of her work meeting interesting. The director was like here it is, this is what we can try to do, but it’s difficult though certainly not impossible.

I know my place lost 45k of a grant we had. 45k in the business world is nothing. Probably doesn’t water 4 plants at the pentagon but it’s big for us. It was unspent covid emergency funds cities and states were putting in the budget to fund things. Our state remained in a state of emergency long after Fauci stated the emergency part was over. So I’m not “happy” about that but tbh in the grant world you usually have a certain amount of time to spend it or the unused portion is to be returned.

So that’s it really, that’s the only real news I got. To everything there is a purpose, and a season. Turn turn turn.

Edit: I should note have stated “most of the time” in my comment about grants. I think if I say “often” it’s more accurate.

It's interesting that this is in any way considered some kind of win, but I guess they have to boast about something in this mess.

There are different approaches to international cooperation...one is actual cooperation with allies working together for a common good, and one is extortion of all your allies, upending markets, higher prices for your consumers, inflation, recession, putting the money supply in jeopardy, etc. The Trump administration has chose the latter, and the fact that something happened that he likely could have gotten without all the damage is a win for some, is baffling. Those allies are never going to trust the administration again, and will isolate themselves from it as much as possible, so I hope it was worth it.

Not to mention the cycle of abuse with his own electorate...they come back for more despite it not being in their best interests...
