It's interesting that this is in any way considered some kind of win, but I guess they have to boast about something in this mess.

There are different approaches to international cooperation...one is actual cooperation with allies working together for a common good, and one is extortion of all your allies, upending markets, higher prices for your consumers, inflation, recession, putting the money supply in jeopardy, etc. The Trump administration has chose the latter, and the fact that something happened that he likely could have gotten without all the damage is a win for some, is baffling. Those allies are never going to trust the administration again, and will isolate themselves from it as much as possible, so I hope it was worth it.

Not to mention the cycle of abuse with his own electorate...they come back for more despite it not being in their best interests...
It worth nothing the "70 countries" number is coming from the administration. No deals have been announced or signed. After the claims of countries calling begging to make deals they refused to name any of the countries when reporters asked.

I have often found that if someone tells you one lie then you can no longer trust any other word that they speak.
If you don't have integrity you don't have anything.

Those alleged 70 countries all probably did trade deals with each other and China instead of Don

The fact that every country has had its own citizens publicly boycotting US goods has done enough damage already.

The only thing I usually buy from 🇺🇸 is knife steel and that company went bust and sold its recipes to a French steel maker only a month or two ago.
So all 🇺🇸 made knives will be made with 🇫🇷 steel now.

CPM (Crucible Particle Metallurgy) files are associated with the bankruptcy of Crucible Industries, which occurred on December 12, 2024. Crucible, a producer of specialty steels, including CPM steels, filed for Chapter 11 reorganization, citing financial struggles. Crucible's main line of business, Crucible Particle Metallurgy, was subsequently sold to French steelmaker Erasteel.

If reddit is to be believed:

1) I'm seeing rumors that Tudor ADs are planning a 5% price hike to offset tariffs.

2) I'm also seeing a bunch of write-ups in my feed from people purporting to work in shipping who claim that current rates of cancelled shipments may be higher than in peak COVID lockdown in 2020.

Anyone here work in US shipping, warehouses, etc got insight on how things are looking?

Apparently Trump's plan to bring more jobs to the US doesn't include prison guards. Those jobs are going to El Salvador.

"The homegrowns are next," Trump told Bukele in the Oval Office. "You gotta build about five more places. ... It's not big enough."

This is much more disturbing to me as a US citizen than tariffs, even though Trump's tariffs are tilting the world away from the USA. The Chinese are said to recognize this, according to a NYTimes Opinion essay:

"In China, one of many nicknames for President Trump is Chuan Jianguo. It literally translates as “Trump the Nation Builder.” My best translation is “Comrade Trump.” The joke is that Mr. Trump is a patriotic son of China who is diligently advancing Chinese interests by causing chaos in the United States."

It's enough to keep you up at night.
