Hi.
I'm new to this forum and to vintage watches itself. I have read quite a many instructions and threads about buying omega online. Now I have found a nice candidate that i might want to buy.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Omega-Seama...917309?hash=item21127a2bfd:g:de4AAOSwfl9XA4Wi

It's a seamaster with cal. 1022. I'm looking for nice looking vintage seamaster with steel band and for some reason i would like to have day-date. So this leaves me with 102x and 75x calibers. And since the 102x seems to be cheaper than the 75x, i think i try to look for them. The watch is supposed to be used daily so not for collections and stored in some drawer.

For this ebay item i linked i have looked for these things:
--
The seller seems to be okay, good feedback, seems honest: tells that there is some problem with date change and has alot of items for sale and is located in berlin.

The listing has pictures of the movement. The movement itself seems to be ok, no franken. But it seems that it is not serviced recently. There is some corrosion visible i think. There is no omega logo on the automatic winding weight (i dont know the correct term)

The dial seems to be okay, i think it is correct for this watch. It seems to have some patina and it might be original. The hands seems to be correct for this cal, they are thin.

The date and day wheels seems to have little bit different colors, not sure if normal and they doesnt seem to align well with the "windows".

There is some colorisation near the crown.

The band seems to be ok.

The case back seems to have correct ref number, 166.0210.

The watch seems to be not cleaned, it seems to have dirt around it.
--

So what do you think? Is the 490e too much for this? I think this will need some service and there seems to be some issues with this. Thing is that i dont have good idea what would be good price for this, but 490e seems quite high and for me thats quite big amount of money.

This is where i got with two weeks looking into these vintage watch things, and i think that i got something right, but i still have much to learn.

(I have also looked for some omegas from thailand or korea but those seems to be almost always put together with parts from different watches and the price is high for that kind of watch, and also it seems that it is not recommended to buy those things)

Welcome to the Forum: so nice to see you did some digging yourself already! 馃憤

Personally, I am not very much into these models, so I could not tell if the dial is original or not, but from the pics of the movement, one might see the dirt (mould??) on the rotor ('winding weight'), but also some rubbing of that rotor against other parts (last pic most visible).
Do count on a service, starting approx EUR 200, (prob. and most likely more, because the 'date-function does not work always well') but wait for others in this Forum to give a more in-depth assessment.

At least, I would ask for more high-res pics from the seller.

Tread carefully and enjoy the hunt!

Seconded. The watch does look nice, but give that it would need a service, I think 500EUR is a bit too much. Not a bad find, but you may want to keep looking!

Datumsfunktion arbeitet nicht immer richtig
It has been a while since I took German classes, but I think he is saying the day date is not working correctly.
In my opinion the price is way to high for this watch.

Thanks for everybody for tips and insight. I contacted the seller and after throwing offers and counter-offers to each others, the offer i am facing now is 370Eur and i'm considering to accept it. Little calculation gives following: 370(price) + 25(delivery) + 300(service, might be more or less) = 695Eur. So the watch would cost me about that much. After the service i would have nice watch that i can also use, and perhaps i am still able to sell it some time in the future for almost the same price, perhaps little less. But taking into account that i am using the watch im turning part of that "value" to my own "personal enjoyment" of wearing this watch and the purpose is not really make a investment that would keep its value but thats just nice addition to this.

Thinking it another way. This is my first omega purchase and it might turn out to be great or not so great but at least it would serve as a lesson. At least now the price is closer to correct price. But if this is still too high for this piece, then i just have to contain myself and not fall for it. I think it might be good price, but that might be also because of the psychological effect of being able to negotiate the price lower...

Decent thinking: money-part is up to you but seems to work out.
Also like you take on 'pleasure might cost some money....' 馃槑

It's easy when buying a first watch to become fixated on a particular one, but there are better examples than this out there. My advice for what it's worth - go for something you can enjoy from the start. If you buy something that wants work doing, and then the work maybe turns out to be more / cost more / take longer than you anticipated, you might not really enjoy owning it when it's finally ready to wear. These later models are not that difficult to find, so be picky, be particular, and be patient!

Perfectly right!

take the time to chose something you really like and that you will enjoy puting on every day. A nice 70's (or late 60's) Omeg acan be found for 500 bucks.
