Hello, I’m in the market for a vintage Seamaster. I haven’t seen too many with a black face and I think this one looks quite nice. The asking price is approximately $900.00 American, which equals $1,200.00 Canadian (where I’m located). I’m wondering if anyone can confirm If this watch looks correct and a rough date of manufacture, also if that’s a fair price. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
I suspect that the seller indicates that the dial has been restored on this one, it's so obvious. There are various other issues as well. Junk. These photos look familiar from a seller that we try to avoid. Can you say who the seller is? I noticed that Montre48 has been removed from eBay, but I suspect he has just taken a new name.
Welcome to the forum. The case looks to me like it seen some aggressive polishing. I am leaning toward a redial. Is the printing on the dial silver?. $900 is a little high IMO.
Thank you, I’m glad to have found so many kind and helpful experts on the topic. It does appear to be silver to me.
Hello, the seller is: Closer0924. They’re allegedly located in Japan. I’m not necessarily against a watch that has had some work done to it, so long as it remains “correct” ie. correct colour, hands, movement etc.
I don't think it's a redial. I've bought several watches from Closer and they've all been 100% as described and authentic. The watch in question doesn't have the typical "high gloss" finish that you see in modern redials and the fonts and markers look quite clean. $900 is probably a bit rich though. Unfortunately, I've never been able to get him to come off of his stated price.
Is the "S" on the Seamaster correct for the time frame of this watch?. I thought that was an earlier style font.
24xxxxxx is early 60s, IIRC. The transition between the coathanger S and modern S took several years, so there's a fair bit of overlap.

When a seller doesn't explicitly say it's original assume it's refinished. Here is a correct 165.010. Notice the SWISS MADE position.
Yes, this is not the seller I was referring to, and closer is a good seller. However, the printing on this dial is not good. Look at the uneven printing of "AUTOMATIC" and the weird letter "M". "Seamaster" is also pretty bad.
Chalk this up as the first sunburst black redial I've seen then. If I was in the market for a similar looking watch, I'd still probably be willing to pay $200 for this one.
That case is polished as hell, $900 is rich for that. I think they key to buying vintage is to play the long game and don’t let impulsive tendencies get a hold of you. Play it long, play it safe, and make sure you get a watch that you like for the right price. If it takes you coming back to the forum for help, so be it. I don’t want to speak for everyone here but I don’t believe anyone minds offering help!
